Chapter 27 - Can I Have This Dance?

And then, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived. The grand doors at the back of the garden swung open, revealing Heidi in her stunning wedding gown. The dress was a vision of lace and silk, hugging her curves before cascading down into a delicate train. A veil adorned her head, sprinkling a touch of magic over her radiant face.

Scott, overcome by emotion, wiped away tears as he gazed at his bride-to-be. His suit fit him impeccably, accentuating his broad shoulders and trim waist. He looked every bit the dashing groom, and it was clear that he couldn't wait to pledge his undying love and commitment to his beautiful bride.

As they all stood in awe of the breathtaking sight before them, Mallory couldn't help but feel a twinge of envy. She yearned for a love like Heidi and Scott's – a love that would encompass her whole being and make her forget the pain of the past. She glanced over at Harris, wondering if he felt the same way.

"Isn't she beautiful?" Mallory whispered, her voice laced with emotion.

"Absolutely stunning," Harris agreed, his eyes never leaving Heidi. But as he spoke, his gaze shifted to meet Mallory's for a fleeting moment, and the unspoken yearning buried within their hearts echoed between them.

The organ music swelled, filling the place with its powerful melody as Heidi gracefully walked down the aisle. Every eye followed her, enraptured by the fairy tale unfolding before them. And as Mallory watched her best friend take those fateful steps toward her future, she couldn't help but hope that one day, fate would grant her the same beautiful gift of love.

As Mallory stood beside her best friend in front of the altar, she couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion coursing through her. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears as she watched Scott tenderly take Heidi's hands, and she imagined herself being treated with the same reverence and love that was so evident between them.

"Friends and family," the preacher began, "we are gathered here today to witness the union of Heidi and Scott in holy matrimony. Marriage is not just a legal contract or a social institution, but rather a sacred bond, a promise made between two people who love each other deeply."

As the ceremony continued, Mallory tried to focus on every word the preacher spoke, but her thoughts kept drifting back to her desires for love and commitment. She clenched her hands together tightly, attempting to keep herself composed and present in the moment for her best friend.

"Scott, do you take Heidi to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse…?" The preacher's voice seemed to fade into the background as Mallory's mind wandered to a day when she might walk down the aisle herself, surrounded by friends and family, pledging her love to someone who would cherish her as much as Scott cherished Heidi.

"…I do," Scott said, his voice choking with emotion.

"…And I do," Heidi echoed, her eyes shining with joy and love.

"By the power vested in me," the preacher proclaimed, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

The garden erupted in applause as Scott and Heidi shared their first kiss as husband and wife, and Mallory wiped away her tears, feeling both elated for her best friend and aching with longing for her chance at happiness.

The guests filed out of the church, making their way to the hotel reception venue. The ballroom was a vision of elegance, with cream-colored walls and crystal chandeliers overhead. Each table was immaculately set with crisp white linens, gold-rimmed plates, and towering centerpieces filled with blush roses and delicate greenery. The soft glow of candlelight filled the room, casting a romantic ambiance over the entire space.

"Wow," Mallory whispered to herself, taking in the exquisite details. "This is truly a dream come true for Heidi."

As she took her seat at the head table alongside Harris, Harriet, and the rest of the wedding party, Mallory couldn't help but continue to daydream about her future – one that might include a man who would love her unconditionally, just as Scott loved Heidi.

"Cheers to the happy couple!" Harris declared, raising his glass in a toast. The room echoed with the clinking of glasses and the laughter of friends and family celebrating the joyous union of two souls destined for one another.

And though Mallory joined in the laughter and celebration, deep down, she couldn't help but cling to the hope that someday, she too would find her own happily ever after.

Mallory took a deep breath, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched Harris from the corner of her eye. The dim lighting of the reception cast a golden glow on his chiseled features, making him appear even more handsome than she remembered. Every time their eyes met, she felt a rush of warmth flooding her cheeks, and she quickly looked away, hoping no one would notice her flushed face.

As the night wore on, the ballroom of the luxurious hotel turned into a whirlwind of laughter and dancing. Friends and family members twirled around the dance floor, illuminated by the warm glow of chandeliers above. Mallory stood to one side, watching the happy faces of Heidi and Scott as they danced their first dance as husband and wife. Her heart swelled with joy for her dear friend, but there was also a dull ache inside, reminding her of the possibilities she had given up to protect her daughter.

Mallory did her best to keep her distance from Harris. She danced with Harriet, laughing and twirling around the dance floor, all the while keenly aware of his presence nearby.

"Daddy, you can dance with Mommy now. I will have my friend as my dance partner," Harriet said innocently.

"May I have this dance?" Harris's voice startled her from her reverie, and she looked up into his gentle blue eyes.

"Sure," she replied hesitantly, trying to keep her emotions in check as they stepped onto the dance floor. Their bodies moved gracefully together, yet there was an unmistakable tension between them.

"I'm glad you're enjoying the evening. You need some time off for yourself and Harriet. No job involved," Harris said, attempting to make light conversation.

"Of course," Mallory replied, forcing a smile. "It's wonderful to see everyone so happy." Her mind raced with thoughts of Harriet, wondering if she would ever be able to give her the loving, stable family she deserved.

"Our daughter is quite the little dancer herself," Harris remarked, nodding towards Harriet twirling around with another flower girl.

"Thank you," Mallory said softly, focusing on the rhythmic pattern of the dance steps to avoid meeting Harris' gaze. "She's very special to me. She's my world now."

"I can see that," Harris replied, his tone sincere. "Listen, Mallory," Harris began, his voice low and filled with emotion. "I know we've had our ups and downs, but I want you to know that I'm committed to making things right between us. If you're willing to give me another chance, I promise not to let you down."

Mallory's heart leaped at his words, but she quickly pushed her emotions aside, reminding herself of the risks involved. "Thank you, Harris," she whispered, barely able to look him in the eye. "But right now, I need to focus on Harriet and myself. We'll see what the future holds."

It was clear that he wanted more than just casual conversation, but Mallory couldn't bring herself to delve deeper just yet.

As the dance ended, Mallory gently pulled away from Harris, offering him a polite smile before excusing herself. She weaved her way through the crowd, stopping to chat with various guests and laughing at their jokes. All the while, her thoughts were consumed by the man she had left behind on the dance floor.

"Mommy!" Harriet rushed into Mallory's arms, her face flushed from excitement. "I danced with a prince!"

"Did you know?" Mallory replied with a warm smile, hoisting her daughter up onto her hip. "That sounds like quite the adventure."

As they watched the festivities together, Mallory couldn't help but steal glances at Harris, who was now deep in conversation with some of the other groomsmen. She knew that he genuinely cared for her and Harriet, but was it enough? Could she risk her heart on a man who had once let her down before?

"Stop it," she scolded herself internally. "You can't afford to get your hopes up again. Think of Harriet."

Mallory caught Harris' eye one last time. Their gazes held each other, full of unspoken emotions and desires. But for now, Mallory reminded herself that she had her priorities - her daughter's welfare came first. And so, with a bittersweet smile, she turned away and focused on making happy memories for Harriet, leaving her heartache on hold.
