Michael and the others returned before dawn.
"We cleared the building and the park. We also searched for any sign of Patrick, but found none—I think he didn't use that place regularly."
"Is anyone hurt?"
"No. I sent them all to rest."
"Thanks, Mick. Alex is upstairs. She only had a graze on her shoulder."
"Thanks. And you?"
"Madison took care of me. I'll be back in shape soon. You should rest too."
Michael nodded and went to his rooms.
Alex was waiting for him, sitting on the windowsill. When he entered, she went to meet him. After looking him over from head to toe and making sure he was okay, she gave him a stern look.
"You sent me away!"
Michael smiled and kissed her.
"I will always try to keep you away from danger. Even though you're a great warrior, my instinct is — and always will be — to protect you and keep you safe." He put a finger to her lips to stop her from speaking. "And I know you feel the same way about me. So don't blame me. If you could, you would have done the same."
Alex opened her mouth to reply but closed it again. He was right. She smiled, took his hand, and led him to the bathroom.
"After a hot shower, you'll feel better."
