Chapter 37 - Chapter 36 – The Road Between the towns

The morning they left the camp felt different, not because the forest had changed, but because they had, since the weight of what they had faced in the cave still lingered in their minds, shaping the way they moved, the way they thought, and even the way they looked at the road ahead.

Alex adjusted the bandages around his torso before putting his shirt back on, the fabric pressing slightly against the wound, reminding him with every movement that he wasn't fully healed yet, but that didn't matter, because stopping was not an option anymore.

"We're moving," he said, grabbing his bag.

Violet was already ready.

"About time," she replied, stretching slightly before recalling some of her Pokémon, though she kept Toxicroak and her Hisuian Sneasel outside, both walking beside her with quiet awareness.

Alex did the same.

Riolu, Grovyle, Zorua, Larvesta, Ceruledge, and Gible all remained outside their Poké Balls, forming a loose but effective formation around him as they began walking through the forest path that would lead them toward the next town.

The forest was quieter than usual.

Not empty.

But aware.

Pokémon watched them from the shadows, from the trees, from the bushes, but none approached recklessly, almost as if something about the Pokemon surrounding those humans made the think twice before going in

"Looks like we made a reputation," Violet muttered, noticing it too.

"Or we just smell like danger," Alex replied.

"Same thing."

They kept walking.

The path was uneven, filled with roots, rocks, and narrow turns, forcing them to stay alert at all times, but it wasn't long before they encountered the first interruption of the day.

A broken cart.

Abandoned.

Or at least, it looked like it.

Alex slowed down immediately.

"Wait."

Violet stopped beside him.

"What is it?"

He pointed.

"Tracks."

Not Pokémon.

Human.

Multiple.

Recent.

Violet's expression sharpened.

"…Ambush?"

"Maybe," Alex replied, already looking around the area more carefully.

Before they could move.

A sound.

Footsteps.

Three figures emerged from behind the trees.

Rough looking.

Armed.

Not trainers.

Not normal ones, at least.

"Well, well," one of them said with a smirk. "Didn't expect travelers here."

Violet rolled her eyes.

"Of course."

Alex didn't speak.

He simply stepped slightly forward.

"We don't have time for this," he said calmly.

The man laughed.

"You've got Pokémon, supplies… looks like you do."

That was enough.

"Riolu, Grovyle," Alex said quietly.

They moved instantly.

The fight didn't last long.

Riolu struck first, a fast, precise hit that knocked one of them down before he could react, while Grovyle moved through the terrain effortlessly, disarming another with a sharp strike.

Violet didn't hesitate either.

"Toxicroak."

One clean attack.

The third man dropped.

"really thought they could beat Pokemon with weapons?"

Silence returned just as quickly as it had been broken.

Violet crossed her arms.

"Pathetic."

Alex crouched slightly, checking their belongings quickly but without interest in anything beyond useful supplies.

"Nothing worth much," he muttered.

"Then let's keep moving," Violet said.

They didn't waste time.

The road continued.

Hours passed.

The forest slowly began to change, becoming less dense, the trees thinning out as sunlight reached the ground more easily, and eventually, they came across something unexpected.

A small clearing.

In the center of it.

A group of wild Pokémon.

Water types.

A shallow pond reflected the sky, and around it, several Pokémon moved peacefully, drinking, resting, existing without tension.

Alex stopped.

"…Interesting."

Violet looked at him.

"You're not thinking of attacking them, right?"

"No," Alex said. "Not everything is a fight."

That surprised her slightly.

But she didn't say anything.

Instead, they watched.

Riolu sat near Alex, calm.

Larvesta hovered slightly above the water, curious but cautious.

Even Gible seemed interested.

For a moment, everything slowed down.

No danger.

No tension.

Just observation.

"…We could train here," Violet suggested.

Alex thought about it.

Then shook his head.

"Not today."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

He looked ahead.

"…We need to reach the town."

A pause.

"…And I want to see what's there."

"okay but we're coming here later"

"fair enough"

They began moving again.

The path became clearer now, more defined, a sign that they were getting closer to civilization, and soon enough, they began to see signs of it.

Old signposts.

Worn but readable.

And finally.

In the distance.

Buildings.

Small at first.

Then clearer.

The next town.

Violet let out a small breath.

"Finally."

Alex didn't respond immediately.

He just looked at it.

"…New place," he said.

"New problems," Violet added.

A slight smirk appeared on Alex's face.

"…Good."

And together, with their Pokémon at their sides, they continued forward, stepping out of the wild and into whatever waited for them next.
