Chapter 15 - chapter 15

Stars, Steel, and Shadows

Location: Stark Tower – 4:00 AM

Lightning spidered across the Manhattan skyline, illuminating the high-tech cocoon of Stark Tower's Lab Bay 3.

Toni Stark stood motionless, armored in the sleek, unfinished body of the Mark II suit. Her pulse echoed through the neural interface, syncing to the low thrum of the arc reactor at her chest.

F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s voice gently filled the chamber.

"Vital signs stable. Atmospheric conditions harsh. Rooftop launch not advisable—"

"Yeah? Neither was Afghanistan," Toni muttered, rotating her shoulders and clenching her gloved fists. "Open the roof."

Panels hissed and retracted, revealing a storm-wracked sky. Rain lashed the platform, wind shrieked like ghosts over metal. She walked forward, boots heavy on the steel.

"Engage thrusters."

Blue plasma ignited under her feet.

"Three… two… one—"

She shot upward with a howl, slicing through the clouds like a missile.

Flight Test – Over New York

Thunder roared as she streaked through the sky, spiraling between buildings, trailing contrails like a jet engine. The Mark II's stabilizers fought her every move. She flipped once—nearly slammed into a billboard—but corrected mid-roll.

"Woooohooo! Oh yeah! Who's the queen of the sky now?!"

She laughed, and for a moment—she felt free.

Then a sharp pull in the core.

A sudden dip.

"F.R.I.D.A.Y.? Suit's pitching."

"Power redistribution request denied—stabilizers at 90% efficiency. Recommend immediate landing."

"Screw that. Let's do a sonic dive."

She burst into a downward corkscrew, wind tearing at her armor, g-forces rattling her bones. She pulled up just above the river and skimmed the surface like a bullet made of thunder.

White House Situation Room – Same Time

"Sir. Emergency broadcast from NASA."

President Stephen Lance Carter stood tall in Toni's gleaming white-and-gold prototype solar suit, designed to absorb and convert raw energy. The golden eagle emblazoned on his chest shimmered in the light.

Maria Hill stepped forward.

"ISS station Bravo has lost a hull panel. Debris field hit two solar arrays. Five astronauts alive. One stranded outside. Communications are failing."

"ETA to orbit?" Lance asked.

"With solar boost—forty seconds."

He glanced at Athena, his AI interface.

"Athena?"

"Radiation shielding nominal. Armor integrity—110%. You are go for launch, Mr. President."

"Then open the goddamn roof."

Launch – 4:19 AM

With a deafening boom, Lance ripped through the clouds. White-gold energy spiraled around his body like lightning given form. Citizens watched in awe as he vanished into space—burning brighter than dawn.

Orbit – 4:23 AM

Inside the ISS, chaos reigned.

Oxygen pressure dropped. Lights flickered. Panels sparked. Sweat streamed down astronaut Sarah Ramirez's brow as she gripped a floating tool kit with trembling hands.

Outside, astronaut Miles Coates spun helplessly, tethered only by a fraying cord.

"Houston... we've lost visual... no power... this may be it," Miles whispered.

Then—gold light exploded around them.

Lance appeared, hovering just above the station, cape flowing behind him, face set like carved stone. His voice boomed through the suit's external speakers.

"You're not dying today."

He zipped forward, caught Miles mid-spin, and zipped him back toward the station, shielding him from cosmic debris with his glowing forearm.

"Stay calm. I've got you."

Inside, Ramirez stared, her eyes wide with tears.

"Is that... Is that really him? Super-President?"

He phased through the breached airlock and sealed it with a solar-hard light construct, temperature and pressure adjusting instantly.

"Everyone breathe," he ordered. "You're safe now."

Lance's Extended Mission – Next 72 Hours

Lance remained in orbit for three days.

He reinforced damaged modules with energy-laced molecular bindings.

Repaired comm satellites.

Recharged solar arrays using direct absorption and redirection.

He even created temporary artificial gravity for stabilization.

He didn't sleep. He barely spoke.

He only worked. Silent. Focused. Blazing like a sun-god above Earth.

Earth – Media Response

CNN – LIVE ANALYSIS

"In an unprecedented display of extraterrestrial heroism, President Carter personally repaired the International Space Station using what experts call 'self-sustaining solar-energy manipulation.'"

Fox News:

"The White House confirms that no U.S. military resources were used—this was entirely Carter himself. What does it mean when your president is your primary defense asset?"

BBC:

"World leaders express concern. NATO and UN councils are calling emergency sessions. But here in New York… schoolchildren call him 'Super-President.'"

Neil deGrasse Tyson:

"If you're asking me if this is human... it's not. Not anymore. But that doesn't mean it's bad. It means we're witnessing the next evolutionary stage of leadership."

Stark Tower – Toni's Lab, Later That Week

Toni leaned over her console, sweat on her brow.

The Mark III was nearly complete—sleeker, reinforced, built for combat.

And survival.

Domino leaned against a tool locker, watching her quietly.

"That new white suit of his... it's your work, huh?" Domino said.

Toni nodded, tapping the AI collar interface. "Athena works like a dream. But that golden glow? That's all him."

Domino's POV flickered back—2002, desert heat, blood and dust.

A mission gone wrong. Entire squad dead. Her powers had erupted like wildfire. And then… Lance arrived. Calm. Radiant. Offered her a hand and a way forward.

Back in the lab, Domino quietly said:

"He's always been more than just a soldier."

Toni paused. "I know. That's why I built him something worthy of a symbol."

Obadiah Stane – The Betrayal Begins

Location: Stark Industries Boardroom

Obadiah stared at the massive wall screen showing Lance in orbit, golden light flaring from his hands.

Board members watched in awe. Some were smiling. Others uneasy.

Stane sipped scotch, silent.

"He's a goddamn demigod," a member whispered.

"Toni's building a new age," another said.

Stane's fingers tightened on the glass.

He's gone. He's in orbit. That suit? Toni built it. Everything I helped create—slipping away.

He nodded once to his assistant.

"Send the call. Raza still owes me a body."
