Chapter 11 - NOX

The next morning, the heat clung to the pavement as Lucian pushed his old bike down the driveway. For months, his world had been no bigger than his desk and monitor. But today, 'Alleyes' wasn't just code on a screen—it needed the world outside.

Clink.

Clank.

[Heavy breathing]

Lucian: Fuck. Shit! Should have learned to ride a motorcycle.

Driving his rusty bicycle, Lucian was sweating his ass off just riding around his neighbourhood… with no route or planning whatsoever. The first place he visited was the local library; he didn't bother to go in, but instead leaned on the fence outside.

Lucian takes out his phone and logs in to his PC terminal using Remote SSH. The sun on the screen made the text nearly unreadable, but with a squint, he typed in the command that mattered most.

AllEyes came alive.

After the scan finished, Lucian stared at the screen. The black terminal reflected his own smile back at him.

But then the numbers hit him.

One scan done. One hundred and forty-nine left.

How long would that take?

Days. Weeks.

Now that the summer holidays had begun, he had nothing but time. But was he really going to waste all of it feeding "Alleyes"?

Many questions arose in Lucian's mind, but the task at hand seemed more rewarding.

Lucian moved; whether it was a coffee shop, parks, or libraries, he hovered like bees onto flowers in those places.

By evening, he had scanned over 7 different places, but staying out the whole day came with consequences.

Merrin Residence,

At home, the family ate while Luna's eyes never left him. "All day… Luci… what were you doing?" Her voice cut like an arrow.

Lucian smiled half-heartedly. "Just hanging out."

Julian, distracted by yesterday's football match, was the only calm one. He grunted. "Could've told us. You have a phone, don't you?"

Julian didn't know. Luna didn't know. Not even Lucian knew — that the fire in him would keep pulsing, whether starved or drowned in oil.

The very next day, Lucian went out again… roaming around the district's library, shops, coffee shops, or restaurants, he was covering them all.

Another day passed, and in just three days, the pace slowed significantly, as expected, yet it was still disappointing.

Sitting under a tree, Lucian was documenting the areas he had covered. "With this, I've visited around 18 places…" he mumbled, a look of annoyance on his face as he scrolled up and down on his phone. Suddenly, he stopped, his mouth slightly open and his eyes twitching as if he had realized something important. Without hesitation, he got up, jumped on his bicycle, and began to rush toward a destination.

"I'm a fucking idiot," he mumbled.

Onetwo wanted him to "cover the areas." Lucian had thought that meant shops, libraries, the obvious places. But the target was one hundred and fifty. Way too much. Of course, Onetwo hadn't just said shops and libraries. To map the whole district—and the areas beyond—meant everywhere. Every place he stepped. Even homes.

Lucian dragged his feet through the neighborhood, scowling at the rows of houses. Of course, it was still going to be annoying but far more manageable and efficient.

Another day, then two more, then a week, then 2 more weeks. Since the start of his summer holidays, the first 3 weeks Lucian used them to map out the whole area he lived in but even then he was a bit short.

Sitting on his desk, looking at the bright screen of the PC, Lucian was exhausted, even clicking on his mouse felt harder than ever.

Onetwo: 142?

@Abyss: yeah…

Onetwo: not bad

@Abyss: Will I get my gift?

Onetwo: hahah… sure!

Lucian's eyes brightened, but there was also a bit of concern.

@Abyss: Let's do this, you send me the gift cards first, then I will send you the data.

Onetwo: can't do that if you ditched. I will lose money.

@Abyss: Same then, I can't send you first either.

Onetwo: Alright, let's do it this way. I'll send you the gift cards in halves—twenty-first, then another twenty, then thirty. You do the same. Send me fifty, then another fifty, and whatever's left after.

@Abyss: okay… You go first!

Onetwo: here. 50$ giftcode: **********

Lucian immediately tried the code, seeing that it worked, and Lucian continued his talk.

Lucian blinked at the screen and grinned. The kit was the payoff — and a door.

***

Two days passed. Lucian had barely slept, his eyes flicking to the window every time a motorbike hummed down the street. Each night the glow of the monitor felt dim against the thought of what was coming.

Bzzz Bzzz

The doorbell cut through the house like a blade. Lucian was already moving before the echo faded. He yanked the door open, breath sharp, and the courier stood there holding a brown box no bigger than a shoebox.

The label read only a string of numbers and letters — nothing traceable. The box felt heavier than it looked. Corrugated cardboard, taped tight, corners scuffed like it had been tossed around too many hands.

Lucian's fingers trembled as he signed for it.

His old bike, the libraries, the sweat, the endless scans — all of it condensed into this one moment. He shut the door quickly, clutching the package like contraband.

Going up the stairs, he tore through the box like paper; the box had another box inside it. Cutting through the opening Lucian's hands tremble in excitement.

Inside: two zip-lock bags crammed with cables and flash drives. Tools, nothing glamorous. In the second bag—two slim Arduino boards, their green surfaces glinting like jade in the light. He ran his thumb across the solder points, already imagining the circuits he could force through them.

But the black foam case in the center was what made his chest tighten. He snapped it open and found a thin booklet, its cover peeling, words in broken English tangled with Russian scribbles. A card with a code taped inside. A single black flash drive nestled in the foam like a tooth.

Lucian exhaled, lips parting in something between a grin and a prayer. This was it. The kit wasn't just hardware—it was an invitation.
