Carnate Forest, 1509
Rhaenys asks her father, Arthur, "Who are those cloaked figures, Father?"
Arthur squints into the shadows and replies, "I think those are Shadow Hunters."
Rhaenys furrows her brow in curiosity. "What are Shadow Hunters, Father?"
Arthur takes a deep breath before answering, "They are known as Nephilim, beings that fight demons."
Rhaenys's eyes widen with intrigue as she processes the information. "Do they really battle the forces of darkness?" she asks, her voice filled with a mix of awe and concern.
Arthur nods solemnly, his expression serious. "Yes, they dedicate their lives to protecting us from evil, often sacrificing everything in the process." Rhaenys feels a surge of admiration for these warriors, her mind racing with thoughts of bravery and the burdens they bear.
"Then why are they here? The bandits are not demons?" Says Rhaenys with a curious tone.
Arthur takes a deep breath, choosing his words carefully. "While bandits may not be supernatural, they can still bring chaos and suffering to our world, and occasionally the line between good and evil blurs in the shadows."
One of the bandits asks the cloaked figures, "Who are you?"
The first cloaked figure removes her hood, revealing a determined expression. "We are the Shadow Hunters," she declares.
Then another bandit asks, "Why are you here?" We're not demons, and these people don't concern you." The bandits are pointing at Arthur and Rhaenys's group.
The cloaked figure's gaze hardened as she replied, "Because every innocent life matters, and we won't stand by while you threaten them."
As she stepped forward, the tension in the air thickened, the bandits exchanging wary glances, unsure of how to respond to the unexpected confrontation.
Half of the bandits that were ready to attack began to move, their eyes locked on the shadow hunters. It was clear that a battle was about to unfold, and the stakes were high.
The other half are ready to continue attacking Arthur and Rhaenys's group.
The two groups braced for conflict, each side determined to emerge victorious. The clash of swords and cries of battle soon echoed through the clearing.
As the two different groups fought against the bandits, the battle got intense because no one knew who was going to come out victorious.
However, as time passed, the bandits began to weaken under the relentless pressure. Realizing their defeat was imminent, they decided to retreat, leaving behind a chaotic scene.
The remaining warriors from both groups stood panting, their bodies marked by the struggle.
The bandits fled to the other side of the forest.
Then Arthur and Rhaenys walk over to the group of cloaked warriors. They thank the female cloaked warrior for their help.
The uncloaked woman says, "You're welcome," and expresses her relief that they came out victorious.
Rhaenys approached the cloaked warrior, her skepticism increasing. "What is your name?" she asked gently, hoping to learn more about her newfound ally.
The young woman hesitated for a moment, then replied, "My name is Tessa Grey."
Rhaenys studied Tessa's face, searching for any hint of deception in her eyes. "Tessa Grey," she repeated thoughtfully. "That's a pretty name."
Tessa smiled faintly, the tension in her shoulders easing just a bit. "Thank you," she said, her voice softening.
Arthur looked at Tessa, curiosity evident in his eyes. "Why did you come and help us?" he asked, wanting to understand her motives.
Tessa's expression shifted as she considered her response. "I couldn't stand by while others suffered," she replied earnestly, her sincerity clear.
Rhaenys exchanged glances with Arthur, intrigued by Tessa's determination. "Your bravery is commendable," she added, appreciating the young woman's courage.
Tessa nodded, her confidence growing as she felt accepted among them. "I believe we all have a role to play in this world," she concluded, her resolve firm.
Tessa's determination to help others resonated with both Rhaenys and Arthur. As they shared a meaningful glance, they simultaneously responded, "We agree."
Tessa looked at them, her eyes shining with curiosity. "So, where are you heading?" she asked.
Arthur then says we are heading towards the kingdom of Dumbrock.
Tessa's curiosity increased as she leaned in closer. "Why are you heading to the kingdom of Dumbrock?" she asked, her interest evident.
"We are going there for trade negotiations. For possible trade of goods and weapons," says Arthur with a neutral tone.
Tessa raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the mention of weapons. "Trade negotiations?"
"Yes," Arthur replied, his expression serious. "Dumbrock has resources we desperately need, but their terms can be quite demanding. We were fortunate enough to get an invitation with them."
Tessa nodded, sensing the weight of the situation and the importance of their mission.
Then sounds of a storm coming in from the north.
"Looks like a storm is coming in," Tessa remarked, her voice steady.
Arthur followed her gaze, understanding the urgency of their plans amidst the brewing tempest.
"You're right. My traveling party and I should get going. To search for shelter for the evening," says Arthur with a serious tone.
"Why don't you come and stay at our camp tonight?" Tessa offered, hoping to provide them safety. The invitation lingered in the air as the first raindrops began to fall.
Arthur looked thoughtful for a moment, weighing the risks against the comfort of companionship. "That sounds like a wise idea, Tessa. We could use the company and a warm fire," he finally replied, a hint of relief washing over his features.
Rhaney nodded in agreement, her eyes reflecting the dim light of the campfire. "I think it's a fantastic idea, Dad. We definitely need the warmth and safety tonight," she added with a serious tone.
Tessa smiled, relieved to see her offer accepted. The rain began to pour, creating a soothing rhythm.
"Let's gather our horses and head over," Arthur suggested, glancing at the darkening sky.
Rhaney quickly gathered her horse, feeling a sense of comfort in their decision. The thought of sharing stories around the fire made her heart lift, despite the storm.
Then they make their way to the Shadowhunters' camp.
