POV: Ember
My heart nearly stopped when I saw Victoria's red eyes staring at my babies.
"You're not taking them anywhere," I said, stepping between her and Hope and Hunter.
Victoria laughed, a cold sound that made my skin crawl. "Oh, sweet Ember. You think you can stop me?"
"Mama, who is the scary lady?" Hope whispered, grabbing my leg.
"Someone who's about to leave," I said firmly.
But before Victoria could respond, the sound of helicopter blades filled the air again. More news crews were arriving.
"Channel 9 News!" someone shouted from above.
"Fox 31 on scene!"
"This is 5280 News, live from Pine Ridge!"
I counted five helicopters circling overhead like vultures. Camera crews were setting up around the ranch faster than I could keep track of.
"This is bad," Dr. Chen said, rushing over to us. "Really, really bad."
"Why are they all here?" I asked.
"Someone leaked the story. Every news station in Colorado is calling this a terrorist attack."
"Terrorist attack?"
