Chapter 24 - Visiting the Void

The mine was a buzzing beehive of progress.

Gleaming carts of ore rumbled past, wheels creaking under the weight of precious metals, uncut gems, and raw crystal pulled straight from the heart of the Ashlands. Sparks flew in the distance where smelters tested early refining techniques, and above it all, Lucien Vale stood calmly with his arms folded behind his back, surveying his domain from the sorting deck.

The twins popped into view at his sides, each lugging scrolls, folders, and clipboards. "Worker morale's good!" chirped Vile. "One guy tried to unionize, but then someone explained what a union was and he got scared."

"Also," added Vex, flipping through notes, "we've had four separate complaints about the bathing schedule, three about soup temperature, and one very passionate letter requesting a mining-themed musical as a morale booster."

Lucien blinked. "Musical?"

"He included lyrics," Vex said, holding up a handwritten page titled 'Pickaxe Passion: The Ballad of the Shaft'.

Lucien smirked, then turned his gaze back to the carts. "Remind me to approve that one."

As the twins scribbled notes, Lucien casually added, "Also, the Void-Mother spoke to me last night while I was... discussing production methods with Sila."

Three heads turned toward him in slow, unified horror.

"You what?" Ignara asked, voice barely above a whisper.

"She opened a portal while I was working... don't give me that look, I was multitasking. And she told me to come see her." He scratched his chin. "She seemed pretty cool actually."

"My Lord!" Ignara looked like she'd swallowed a hot coal. "Are you joking?"

"No?" He blinked innocently. "Nice lady. Bit dramatic."

The twins immediately began flailing.

"Nice lady?!" Vex squeaked.

"She's chaos incarnate!" Vile wailed.

"She's our literal patron goddess!" Ignara snapped, eyes wide. "She's the reason the Ashlands have any magic at all! Each kingdom's got a demi-god overseeing them, sure, but the Void-Mother actually shows up! She meddles! She appears in your soup pot or your dreams! She doesn't follow rules, she is the rule!"

"She watched us," Lucien said thoughtfully. "In the middle of a very productive meeting."

Ignara buried her face in her hands.

The twins huddled like scared mice.

"She saw you?!" Vex gasped.

"Saw everything," Lucien said with a wink. "Told me to finish up before I came over. Very considerate."

"Do you even understand how dangerous she is?" Ignara hissed. "The last time she got bored, she turned an entire city into a flock of ash-pigeons because they outlawed nudity!"

Lucien sighed. "Alright, alright. I get it. She's a big deal. Sounds like I should probably go see what she wants."

The trio nodded frantically.

"Where is she?" Lucien asked.

They all exchanged looks.

"...We don't know," Vile admitted.

"She doesn't live anywhere," said Vex. "She's has her own realm, or another plane, or... no one really knows. She just… appears."

"So how do I meet her?"

"You… have to pray," Ignara said reluctantly.

Lucien's face twisted in distaste. "That's it? Just get on my knees and start talking?"

The twins nodded. "That's the classic method," Vex said. "She responds to chaos. And apparently demon-lords rutting mid-report."

Lucien rolled his eyes. "Fine. Let's see what happens."

Later that day, inside the private royal tent, Lucien knelt beside a burning brazier. Serenith floated a few feet away, perched on a glowing orb of light, her wings tucked close.

"You, kneeling?" she teased. "Didn't think I'd see that unless a goddess was involved."

Lucien didn't open his eyes. "I'd kneel for you if it meant I got to taste the heaven between your thighs."

Serenith zapped him in the rear with a flick of her halo.

He flinched. "Fair."

"Carry on," she said sweetly.

Lucien closed his eyes again, took a breath, and said, "Alright, Void-Mother. It's me. Lucien. Demon Lord. Sort of new at this. You popped up last night while I was in the middle of very important business-based coupling. I figured I should check in. Things are going well. The mine's booming. The staff's happy. I might try to industrialize the Ashlands and maybe take over the world—via trade agreements and seduction. Just figured I'd say hi."

The air in front of him shimmered. Then snapped.

A swirling rift tore open, ash swirling within like a cyclone. The Void-Mother's head popped out. Wizened, wild-haired, and grinning like a madwoman.

"Well," she cackled. "That was the weirdest prayer I've heard in centuries."

Lucien blinked. "I aim to please."

"Demon lords don't usually chat me up," she said. "They either beg for power or scream as I curse their flesh." Her grin widened. "You're gonna be fun."

With a sudden whoosh, invisible tendrils wrapped around Lucien and yanked him through the rift.

"Hey!" Serenith cried, wings flaring.

The Void-Mother poked her head back through the portal. "You coming too, girly?"

Serenith scowled. "Of course I'm coming. I'm his parole officer."

With an exasperated sigh, she flew through after them.

Lucien stumbled slightly as he landed on a rug made of glowing vines. They stood inside a cozy wooden cottage filled with flickering candles and shelves of strange jars. Outside the windows stretched a lush, verdant forest, impossibly thick and glowing softly.

"Where are we?" Lucien asked.

"Nowhere," the Void-Mother replied.

She snapped her fingers. The forest vanished. They now stood in a hellish wasteland, all fire and crumbling stone.

Another snap. They were underwater. Schools of glowing fish zipped past the windows.

Another. They were standing in what looked exactly like the Ashlands.

Lucien whistled. "Neat trick."

"I know many," she said proudly.

She shimmered, her form vibrating for a moment, then with a flash, she transformed into a towering, impossibly beautiful elf-like woman. Her skin shimmered like onyx dust, her eyes burned like twin suns, and her body.

Lucien had to adjust his collar.

Then his crotch.

She noticed.

"Oh? Do you like this form better?" she said, voice dripping with mischief.

Lucien nodded, eyes glued to her curves. "I'm not made of stone, lady."

"Not yet," she purred, then gestured toward a set of velvet chairs. "Sit."

Lucien and Serenith complied.

"So," the Void-Mother said, lounging backwards. "Why didn't you come to me sooner?"

Lucien shrugged. "Didn't know you existed until last night."

She blinked. "How's that possible?"

Serenith chimed in. "Lucien isn't a naturally-born demon lord. He was installed by the gods. Part of a divine rebalancing effort."

The Void-Mother's eyes went wide. "Seriously?" Then she burst into laughter. "Those lazy bastards finally moved their celestial asses."

She turned back to Lucien. "So what's the plan?"

Lucien leaned back. "Simple. Fix the world. Not through slaughter, but through brilliance. Trade. Innovation. Seduction... where applicable."

The Void-Mother howled with laughter again. "You're insane! I love it! Shame I'm forbidden from helping directly…"

Lucien tensed. "Forbidden?"

The Void-Mother waved a hand. "I'm only allowed to manage the land. Provide magic. Keep the balance. But I like watching."

Lucien smirked. "Then come watch. Travel with us. Witness the show."

"Hmph," she said. "I might just do that."

Serenith cleared her throat. "Just remember... interfering with sentient affairs is strictly forbidden for your kind."

The Void-Mother scoffed. "The gods barely care about the Ashlands. I've done what I want for centuries. Besides, you're here. You can file a complaint."

"I will," Serenith muttered. "In great detail."

Lucien chuckled. "You'll do fine. If you can handle me, you can handle anything."

The Void-Mother stood.

She sauntered over to Lucien, impossibly tall, impossibly graceful. She placed her foot between his legs and nudged, her golden eyes gleaming.

"I wonder," she whispered. "Can you handle me, Demon Lord?"

Lucien's mouth curved into a dangerous smile. "Why don't we find out?"

Serenith threw her hands in the air. "Oh come on! There has to be a rule against this!"

"There is," the Void-Mother said sweetly. "But rules are more like… suggestions to me."

She turned and walked toward a shimmering door at the far end of the cottage. It opened to light and perfume and warmth. She beckoned Lucien with a curl of her finger.

Lucien stood slowly.

Adjusted his coat.

Then walked in like a king toward his coronation.

"I'm putting everything in my report," Serenith groaned.

The door closed behind him.

A soft gasp echoed from behind.

Then the Void-Mother's voice, amused and breathy, muttered. "Oh my… I didn't know demon lords got so big."

The angel rolled her eyes until they almost glowed.
