Sous wasn't able to get any sleep that night and just spent it sitting up in het bed thinking. Thinking of everything that had come to happen within just twenty-four hours. One moment she was in the mist of packing, next she was trying to figure out what happened to Jacob, then being punched by Randali, to Randali being dead.
The bed was too small anyway in her room at Shadow's place. The bed was probably about five feet and she was well past that.
She got up from her bed and walked down the hall where there was a fire cracking in the fire place. She sat on the rug with her hands up as if she were freezing.
Just how long it would take for the Hunters to come to her and how soon should she head out? She didn't have her wand so she'd be summoning little baby basilisk.
With a sigh, she fell back on the rug with her eyes up to the cieling. She was thinking what her future children would be like once they were born. Would Tany or Zan even let her see them?
Her ears twitched and looked up to see Shadow coming into the kitchen. He walked into the living room and sat down on his recliner.
"My mother informed me of the news," he said, appearing disappointed. "I'm sorry it has come to this, Sous. You can't stay here long."
"I know, the Hunters are coming."
He nodded his head and relaxed in his chair. "There's a spell I can teach you that can help you ward off the Hunters until after you said your goodbyes."
Sous sat up and moved closer to him. "Keep in mind that when you, a suspect uses it, then time will be added on to your sentence."
Sous nodded her head, understanding the implications.
"Fulmen! That is the spell you use with your wand. It will cause a bright white flash to appear. They will be blind for a short period of time, allowing you to escape." Shadow got up and walked to his hall closet. He pulled out a wand that looked to be several years old. Even blew off some cobwebs.
He handed it to Sous. "Here! Use this for a while."
Kara also wasn't able to sleep that night either. She stayed awake thinking of Jacob and his head being cut off, slammed on that spike. Then for Sous and that priestess girl to say it was Doureena...it was...it was too much.
She went downstairs to get herself a glass of water. When she walked into the living room, Derrick was sitting on the couch, rubbing his belly. He looked tired, half asleep. When he saw Kara, he quickly got up. "Did you see him...Jacob?"
Kara shook her head. "No, I didn't see him." She walked past him toward the kitchen. Derrick followed her.
"I don't believe you," Derrick said, his voice thick. "We have a baby together." Kara filled her glass from the tap. The water tasted metallic. Derrick leaned against the doorway. "Kara, please...tell me."
Kara didn't turn. "Jacob was killed by a wolf. And I'm sure you know the reason why." The silence stretched. Outside, wind rattled the windowpane. Derrick's knuckles whitened on the doorframe. "Think...Derrick, do you seriously think mom would let him, a betrayer be with you?"
Kara drained the glass. The metallic tang lingered. "I don't think he stooda chance." She paused, remembering Randali's lifeless eyes. "And now he's dead."
Derrick shook his head, tears storming down his face. Their sire wouldn't do that. She wouldn't kill the Alpha that got him pregnant.
Kara placed the glass in the sink. "Our sire killed Jacob." Derrick froze.
"What?" He asked, Kara turned to face him.
"He was killed, Derrick." Derrick's expression darkened.
"I...I don't believe you. It must have been another wolf. Siree wouldn't do that." Kara shrugged. There was no getting to him. Not yet. He didn't understand the politics of it all.
"Tilkalde!" Little baby basilisk appeared with Sous on top of its head. It was early in the morning and Sous was now going to make her way to the Witching Salon and Vania to see the Three Gs and Tani.
"I told Monica that the Hunters will more than likely make an appearance at her doorstep. Hunters go all over when one of their own has been killed," Shadow said, tightening up his jacket. "Sous, you take care now." He gave a little pat on little baby basilisk back and the two were off.
