Little baby basilisk had a tiny band aid on its cheek in the location the female rat slapped it. Sous awoke to find the little snake crying wavy blue tears as it was clearly traumatized as would any creature be if they were assaulted by their food.
Sous spent the early hours before the school searching for the rat but even with her keen ears, the campus was just too big.
She went back to her room defeated and began to get dressed to meet up with Faye to go to the sparring arena for them to learn about the sparring team. Sous remembered the adults wanted her to be apart of the dueling and sparring team. She managed to be apart of the agility team although she wasn't competing just yet. Mostly training with Peo and the others.
She placed her sweater over her head and placed her shoes on. When she opened the door, she saw Faye leaning against the wall waiting for her. If Faye were a wolf, she would definitely be an Alpha, there was no doubt about it. Sous never considered anyone a best friend but she felt Faye was rising up the ranks to be just that. They got along just as well, but their love for fighting and wanting to get stronger was what really bonded them.
Together they walked down the stairs into the cafeteria for breakfast. The others were there too except for Jacob who was still in the infirmary. Tany was a bit nervous to see Faye with Sous because she knew the Cadjins girl was going to inform Sous of the truth.
Faye looked at Tany and gave her an expression that signify her telling the truth would set her free. Tany had too much pride and stuck up her nose to Faye prior to excusing herself.
When the others had gone to get ready for class, Faye pushed her tray away. "Jacob is in the nurses' office?"
"What?"
"Tany lied to you." Faye was direct. "Krampus came after Jacob while they were in Fornik. He was injured and has been in the nurses' office since."
The fork Sous was eating with fell onto the floor. She was completely flabbergasted. She slammed her hands on the table and quickly got up. Faye watched her run to the infirmary.
Sous extracted her claws and ran along the walls, skipping over children, and ignoring professors as she did so. When she got to the infirmary, it was closed off to the public with the hunters standing guard.
"Hunters?" She whispered. She stepped back and pumped into Headmaster Fanu. She looked up at him. "Where's Jacob?"
She barely allowed him to finish speaking once his index finger pointed in the direction of her friend. She slammed herself into the door, seeing Jacob laying down in one of the beds. The only bed that wasn't vacant.
His eyes were bloodshot, wet from spending the night and morning crying. His voice was still hoarse. He wiped his eyes when he saw Sous, not able to put on a smile for her. She walked to his side and the two shared a hug. Jacob nearly chocked out more tears.
"I can never just be." He said, looking defeated.
Sous pulled up the covers, knowing it was Thibodeux who was behind all of this. Jacob had told Sous, Faye had put up a good fight but she would have surely lost if Alana hadn't entered the room.
"I don't know why I didn't hear it. I hate she had to fight on her own."
"Tany didn't tell you what happened at the candy store?"
Sous decided to not answer. She didn't want to put Tany in a bad light. It still didn't explain why she wasn't hearing anything at night so as to wake up. She would have heard his movements, his snarls, his chains.
She reached out to hug him again. "I'm so sorry I wasn't here, Jacob."
Sous made a mental note to herself that she would be staying with Jacob that night and that maybe she could recruit Alana or Faye to find Thibodeux and get her to unsummon the beast. She was confused, the school should be doing what they can to stop this but they seemed to be lagging their feet. Probably following protocol, but the way they were moving would surely lead to another death and they already had two.
Half way through the session, Sous walked into the circle court that acted as the sparring arena. It was behind the school next to the agility fields and in between the dueling courts.
A tall young man about the same skin color as Faye came walking to Sous when he noticed her appoarching. His hair was curly and cut short with blonde tips. He also had a silver stud ear ring in one ear.
"Hey, you Sous?" He asked.
Sous noticed that same drawl and twang as Faye's voice.
"I'm Frederick."
"Let me guess, Faye's older brother." For one, they looked alike and unlike in Canas, in Nadia, siblings often had the same first initial as each other.
Sous held a book in her hand that she was supposed to read regarding the rules and regulations of joining the sparring team. After she read it, she and the other first years would need to take an exam. Afterwards, they would tran for the entire second semester. Then towards the end of the semester, they would take another exam. This time it would be an actual sparring exam to see who makes the final cut for the next school years team.
The library was packed with students cramming in information for the upcoming midterms. After classes were over, it was where Sous knew she could find Tany.
The silver haired girl was in the back sitting at a table all to herself. She looked up when she heard someone appoarching. Tany lowered her gaze when she saw it was Sous.
The two girls sat on the bench they have become accustomed to in the garden. Sous folded her hands in her lap, keeping her eyes forward on the horizon as twilight began to set in. The cast of the orange and blue just as the two colors meet.
"Why didn't you tell me about Jacob?
Tany was silent, thinking of how she could explain herself to this Alpha who suddenly felt intimidating. She fidgeted then sighed. "You weren't sleeping. Because of your panic attacks, I felt something bad could happen if you stayed up all hours of the night."
"Jacob could have been killed," Sous reminded Tany but the witch didn't respond back. "What did you do to me, Tany?"
"I put a spell on you to make you sleep through the night."
That was why Sous wasn't able to hear anything. Her jaw clinched and her hands scratched the service of the bench they sat on. She wanted to yell at Tany so bad. Wanted to scold her about how dangerous it was for her to do that. Sous needed to sleep. That part was true. She also needed the truth, something Tany hid from her at the risk of harming another friend.
Sous stood up tall with her hands into fist. She looked down on Tany, disgusted yet understanding of this girl's actions.
"I'm going to the other infirmary to watch over Jacob. Imma need you to do me a favor." Tany was eagered to help Sous, eager to please her after such a mistake with no malicious intent. "Go to Alana or Faye or even both, have them find Thibodeux, present her to the headmaster so she can unsummon this beast."
