Chapter 21 - The Balloon Hero

If anyone tells you flying is cool, don't believe them.

Flying with wings? Sure, majestic.

Flying with magic? Awesome, stylish.

Flying because your system bugged and decided "gravity.exe has stopped working"?

Yeah. Not so majestic.

Flap Flap Panic

"HOW DO I TURN THIS OFF?!" I screamed, flailing my arms as my body awkwardly floated above the trees.

[Error: Flight Enabled (Temporary)]

[Remaining Time: 01:29]

"One minute and a half?!" I shouted. "That's not flying, that's an expiration date!"

Bugsalot cupped his hands and yelled, "TRY FLAPPING HARDER!"

I glared down. "I'M NOT A PIGEON!"

Rina, of course, tried to stay calm. "Just… steer yourself toward that clearing!"

"Steer?!" I spun mid-air, nearly colliding with a tree. "Lady, this isn't a car—it's a panic simulator!"

Balloon Mode: Engaged

I drifted lower and lower, my legs kicking like I was swimming in digital soup.

Zell sighed, already climbing down the cliff after me. "This is embarrassing to watch."

"Oh, I'm so sorry that my death-defying glitch isn't entertaining enough!" I yelled back.

[Warning: Flight Ending]

[Prepare for crash.]

"Wait, what do you mean cra—"

The glitch wore off.

I plummeted.

And landed… right on top of Zell.

"Oof!" he groaned, flat on the ground.

I winced. "Uh… thanks for breaking my fall?"

He growled. "Next time, I'm letting you splatter."

Finally a Break… Or Not

We regrouped in the clearing. For once, no Debug Hunters, no javelins, no system errors trying to kill me. Just peace and quiet.

Naturally, that lasted about ten seconds.

Rina checked the corrupted compass. "The Architect's last trace is still south. If we move now, we can reach the abandoned outpost before dawn."

I raised my hand. "Question. What if instead, we… didn't?"

"Yuto," she said sternly. "Every time we delay, the system adapts. Those hunters won't stop."

"Yeah, but every time we don't delay, I nearly die in a hilarious new way!"

Bugsalot chimed in, "I vote we rest! My circuits need a nap."

"You don't even sleep," Zell muttered.

---

A Weird Encounter

As we debated, the clearing shimmered. Glitches rippled across the grass, like the code itself was unraveling.

A figure appeared—hooded, face hidden, body flickering between real and digital static.

"Finally…" the voice rasped. "The anomaly."

"Uh, hi?" I waved awkwardly. "Can we… not fight for five minutes? I just learned how to balloon-fly."

The figure tilted their head. "No. I'm not here to delete you. I'm here to warn you."

Rina stepped closer, eyes narrowing. "Who are you?"

The hooded figure glitched again, voice distorting.

"I… was like him," they said, pointing at me. "A player who broke the system. And I survived."

---

Cliffhanger

My jaw dropped. "Wait—you're saying… there are more like me?!"

The figure nodded. "Yes. But those who glitched too far were… erased."

Then, before we could ask anything else, the figure dissolved into static, leaving only a single line of code burned into the dirt:

SURVIVE THE RESET.

We all stared at the message.

"…Okay," I said, rubbing my temples. "What the heck does that mean?"

Zell crossed his arms. "It means this world isn't just broken. It's… preparing for something worse."

And just like that, my anxiety got a new best friend.
