Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

The Voice That Shouldn't Speak

Beneath Arcanhelm's golden skyline, where spires pierced the heavens and banners danced on windless air, something ancient stirred.

Kael woke with a start. Not from a dream this time, but from a voice. It was not inside his mind, nor in the room.

It came from beneath.

---

The book lay silent. No glow, no whispers. But Kael felt a tug like invisible threads pulling him toward the lower levels of the Sanctum Quartel.

He dressed swiftly, pressing a hand to the warded door. It opened without a sound.

Even the runes seemed to dim as he passed.

---

He descended spiral stairs lit by pale blue torches. The walls narrowed the deeper he went. Statues lined the descent: stone figures with covered eyes, broken swords, chained wings.

Then the voice came again:

"Kael... son of silence... heir of ruin... come."

His heart thundered.

---

At the lowest floor, he reached a sealed gate. It was circular, forged from obsidian and laced with shimmering script. He touched it.

Blood seeped from his fingertips.

The gate glowed.

And opened.

---

Inside was a vast cavern, ancient and untouched. Runes lit up as he walked. In the center stood a stone dais—and atop it, a boy. The same boy from his visions.

Silver-haired. Eyes like dying stars.

The boy turned slowly. "You came."

Kael trembled. "Who... what are you?"

"I am the Voice That Shouldn't Speak. The piece Arcanhelm buried."

Kael stepped closer. "You're not a ghost."

"No. I'm a memory. A weapon. A question they feared."

He pointed to Kael's chest. "You were chosen because you died without hating the world. That's rare."

"Chosen by who?"

"By the Architect. The one who writes beneath fate."

---

Kael dropped to one knee, overwhelmed. Visions poured in again:

A battlefield littered with angels and monsters.

A masked girl stabbing a king.

A tower falling into the sea.

A woman's voice: "Save them... even if they curse you."

Then silence.

---

When he opened his eyes, the boy was gone.

In his place, a mirror.

Kael approached. It didn't reflect him. It showed a throne. A broken sword. And a city burning under a black sun.

He staggered back. "What does it mean?!"

The mirror cracked.

And whispered : "You will become the sin they cannot forgive."

---

He ran.

Back through the gate. Up the stairs. Heart racing.

Lireen stood at the top, sword drawn. "Where have you been?!"

Kael gasped. "Below... there's something down there. Someone."

She pushed him against the wall. "No one goes beneath the Sanctum. Not even me. That place was sealed a hundred years ago."

"Then why did it open for me?!"

She stared at him.

And whispered, "Because you are not just Kael. You're something they buried."

---

The next day, the Council summoned him.

Velien stood waiting. Cold, sharp, unreadable.

He escorted Kael across a bridge of crystal, into the Council Spire.

Twelve seats. Eleven filled. One empty the highest.

The questioning began:

"Who are you?"

"Why does the book follow you?"

"Are you reborn of Ardynus?"

Kael answered what he could. With honesty, with restraint.

But then the empty seat spoke.

"You opened the sealed gate. Only a cursed soul could do that."

Gasps. Velien tensed.

Kael clenched his fists. "I didn't ask for this."

"And yet, it chose you."

---

As Kael was led back to his chamber, Naria approached him in the hallway. Her expression was pale.

"I heard what happened... They're calling you the Vessel of Ruin."

Kael didn't reply.

She reached into her cloak and pressed a folded paper into his hand. "Meet me tonight. Same place. I need to show you something. About the Architect."

She walked away before he could ask.

---

That night, Kael waited at the Sanctum balcony.

But Naria never came.

Instead... a scream echoed from the tower's western wing.

The city bell tolled once.

Someone had died.

To be continued...
