My cell phone buzzed with my sister's name flashing across the screen. She called to share some good news – she'd landed a position as Damian's assistant. I was genuinely pleased, knowing Damian would treat her well. She also mentioned she'd be taking Maya to college since she was already at the office. The two of them had developed a genuine connection, which brought me comfort.
It was exactly what both of them needed. Lana had been searching for friendship in this new city, and Maya's social circle had been shrinking lately.
Our usual group dynamics had shifted dramatically. Hazel barely had time to breathe with her five energetic children demanding constant attention. Stella was fully immersed in caring for her newborn. Thea had moved away, and Scarlett's schedule remained perpetually packed, resulting in the women rarely gathering anymore. Chloe still visited Maya regularly at the apartment, but she was currently enjoying her vacation with Noah somewhere exotic.
