The unofficial investigation Damon had assigned me sent a thrill of excitement through my veins. Everything about this case seemed off, yet had been conveniently dismissed as coincidence.
I arrived in the sleepy town early Saturday morning, cruising slowly through the streets to get my bearings. It was a compact urban center surrounded by vast farmland stretching in every direction. The logistics of medical house calls would be challenging in such terrain, but the farm where the woman had reportedly died during childbirth was just twenty minutes from town on a well-maintained road.
