Damon's POV
The stack of paperwork from a recent arrest occupied my attention at the precinct when my phone vibrated. A text from Maya sent my pulse racing—my father was at our apartment. Alone with her. My father could be ruthless when it suited him, and the thought of them together made my stomach clench. I needed to finish processing this perp before I could leave, each passing minute feeling like an eternity. Once done, I approached the duty sergeant.
"Family emergency. Need to head out but I'll be back ASAP. Can you cover?"
With his nod of approval, I raced to my car. The drive home took fifteen agonizing minutes through midday traffic, my mind conjuring increasingly worrisome scenarios.
When I burst through our apartment door, the scene before me froze my blood. A young man had Maya pinned down, his fist tangled in her hair as she struggled beneath him. Rage exploded through my veins. Who was this punk laying hands on my Maya?
