Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Dragon Hunter

The storm had just passed. In a forest on Isla Nublar, four people were walking.

"We really have to move at night?" Dr. Grant asked Jinlang.

"Absolutely," Jinlang replied, showing no intention of stopping.

"Ugh—who exactly are you?" the little girl suddenly asked Jinlang.

Jinlang paused mid-step, turned around, and said, "I am a dragon-hunter from the far East!"

"A dragon-hunter? What…?" the little boy asked curiously.

"I hunt dangerous creatures. Creatures like these!" Jinlang said as he revealed two sharp triceratops horns—each about sixty centimeters long—from his pack.

"Oh my god! Whose horns are those?" Dr. Grant exclaimed, reaching toward the horns. But Jinlang slid them into his belt. "Let's keep moving!" he said, leading the group forward.

"Hey! Can I see them?" Grant asked, annoyed.

"No," Jinlang replied firmly.

Jinlang walked ahead, with the others trailing behind. Suddenly, he raised his hand, signaling them to halt.

"What is it?" Grant whispered.

"Dinosaurs," Jinlang said quietly, drawing one of his triceratops horns.

"Shit—raptors!" he yelled. "Climb the trees—now!"

Grant froze, then hurriedly climbed up, bringing the two children with him.

"Skree!" A raptor about a meter tall leapt from the underbrush toward Jinlang. He rolled aside to evade its attack, then kicked out at it.

The raptor extended its claws toward Jinlang's leg. He swiftly extended his left arm—it morphed into a sinewy snake-like limb—and he wrapped it around the raptor's claws. The raptor lunged to bite his hand—Jinlang knew all too well the raking force of its jaws.

Without hesitation, Jinlang plunged the horn in his right hand into the raptor's neck. "Graaah!" it shrieked, struggling violently. He yanked it free and drew the second horn, stabbing it into its mouth, twisting until the raptor violently convulsed, then fell still. He finally relaxed and withdrew his snake-arm and the horns.

"Good heavens—you actually killed a raptor!" Grant said, climbing down, astonished. The two kids were equally stunned.

"I'm a dragon-hunter," Jinlang said softly.

"Tim, did you see? His arm—like it stretches!" the little girl whispered to the boy.

But Tim paid no mind; he was awed. "Wow—you're amazing! Can you teach me?"

"Tim!" the girl warned—she was still frightened.

"I can't teach you," Jinlang said with a chuckle, "because I'm a modification."

"What's that?" Tim asked.

"I've grafted animal abilities into myself," Jinlang explained, stretching his left arm, wrapping it twice around Tim's waist, then retracting it. "This arm is like a python's."

"My god… that's… kind of gross," Grant said in disbelief; the girl covered her mouth in shock. Jinlang smiled and flicked out his forked tongue.

"Oh!" Grant jumped again as Jinlang's snake tongue flicked out.

"Why don't you two stay up in the tree?" Jinlang said coldly.

"What are you going to do?" Grant asked.

"Eat," Jinlang replied with a grin.

Hearing that, the two kids clutched their stomachs. "You hungry too? I've got snacks." Jinlang rummaged through the ring at his waist and pulled out packaged noodles and ham.

"Here—go ahead and eat." He handed the food to Grant, then dragged the raptor corpse into the grass.

Back in the tree, Grant and the kids quietly watched the grass. The kids munched away.

"Doc, don't want any?" asked Tim, offering Grant a snack.

"No thanks—go ahead," Grant said, smiling.

After a moment, Jinlang emerged from the underbrush—he looked frustrated. He climbed into the tree.

"What happened to the raptor?" Grant asked, concerned.

"I ate it," Jinlang shrugged.

"What?! That big one?!" Grant exclaimed.

"Got a big appetite," Jinlang replied with a chuckle—but then coughed as the little girl started choking on her noodles. Jinlang patted her back and offered her water.

"Thanks!" she said gratefully after a drink.

"Here, let me show you a trick for these noodles," Jinlang said, crushing the noodles, adding the seasoning, and mixing.

"Wow—it's so much better!" the girl said after trying it.

"Really?! Let me try too!" Tim said, excitedly taking a bite.

Jinlang smiled and handed a bottle of water and some food to Dr. Grant.

Grant eyed safety and asked quietly, "You left behind the trike horns and meat too?"

"Yes," Jinlang replied, smiling faintly.

"Why did you kill that triceratops? It wasn't aggressive," Grant reproached.

"I was," Jinlang shot back, coldly.

Grant glared at him, but Jinlang handed him food and turned away.

After a moment, Grant accepted and began to eat.

Once everyone finished, Jinlang scooped up the two children and leapt down. "Time to go," he said, setting them down.

He looked down at the tired kids. "Let me carry you," he said, squatting.

"I can carry Tim!" Grant offered.

Jinlang shrugged indifferently.
