*Hazel's POV*
I jerked awake in total darkness.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I struggled to orient myself. The air felt heavy, charged with lingering electricity from the storm that had been raging when I fell asleep.
But something was wrong. The camper was silent—no hum of appliances, no soft breathing from the children's bunks.
"Hello?" I called out, my voice small in the darkness.
No answer.
The power must be out. I fumbled for my phone on the bedside table, knocking something over in the process. The clatter echoed in the silence.
Finally, my fingers closed around the familiar shape. I clicked the power button, squinting as the screen lit up. 3:47 AM.
"Kids?" I called again, louder this time.
Still nothing.
A knot of panic formed in my throat. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood, using my phone's light to guide me through the camper.
Empty bunks greeted me. No children. No one.
"Lily? Noah?" I moved faster, heart racing. "Zach? Mia? Anyone?"
