Chapter 206: Dual Mega Charizard
Basalt's heart pounded in his chest. "Bronzong, we need to go faster!"
"Right!" Bronzong nodded, activating its Reverse Gravity to lighten its load as it carried Basalt out of the cave at full speed.
Outside, Master Axel's Claydol was down. In its place was a primarily orange, camel-like Pokémon with a pale, tan snout and three blue circles on each side of its body. The humps on its back resembled volcanoes. It was a Camerupt.
And on its forehead, a brilliant stone gleamed.
"A Mega Stone!" Basalt gasped. This was clearly Master Axel's true ace. The female Tyranitar was now lying unconscious on the ground, apparently defeated by the Camerupt, which didn't have a single scratch on it.
But the male Tyranitar was a different story entirely. The Elite-level Desert Tyrant's eyes were no longer cold and indifferent. They were burning with an endless, manic frenzy. And when it saw Basalt, that frenzy intensified.
"Of course," Basalt's eye twitched. The Tyranitar's expression was exactly the same as the Rhyperior's had been. "Even with a psychic shield, I can't hide it from an Elite-level Pokémon's senses."
"Bronzong, let's go!" he yelled, patting the bolt on its head.
"ROAR!" The Tyranitar let out a furious roar, and even from hundreds of meters away, it manipulated the sand, forming a rope that shot out and wrapped around Bronzong, trapping it completely.
"Director!" Master Axel's eyes narrowed. A brilliant keystone was now embedded in the gauntlet on his arm.
At the same time, another Pokémon appeared beside the Director, radiating an intense heat. It was a Charizard, and on its tail, another Mega Stone gleamed.
"Chandelure, escort Basalt out of here," the Director commanded. "We'll hold off the rampaging Tyranitar. Go, now!"
The Tyranitar was already on the move, forming massive, sharp pillars of rock around its body and launching them like a volley of missiles.
Stone Edge.
Master Axel and the Director exchanged a look. They had no choice but to go all out.
"Now you fight, then you fight!"
The two Keystones on their arms began to glow with a brilliant light.
"Camerupt, Mega Evolve!"
"Charizard, Mega Evolve!"
As the two Pokémon were engulfed in the light of Mega Evolution, the Chandelure's flames burned away the sand rope, freeing Basalt.
"Bronzong, let's go!" he yelled, but his eyes were glued to the two evolving Pokémon.
"ROAR!"
"GROAN!"
When the light faded, two new forms were revealed.
The Mega Camerupt now had a single, massive volcano on its back, spewing molten rock. The Mega Charizard's body was now primarily black, with a blue underside. A third horn had sprouted from its head, and small, blue wings had grown on its wrists. Blue flames now erupted from the sides of its mouth.
"Mega Charizard X!" Basalt breathed, a thrill of excitement running through him.
As the Mega Charizard X appeared, the raging Sandstorm seemed to recede, its power suppressed.
"It's Mega Charizard X's Drought ability!" Basalt's face lit up. "So this is the Director's true power."
But his hope was short-lived. The Sandstorm, which had been suppressed, roared back to life, even more violent than before. The Elite-level Tyranitar's Sand Stream was simply too powerful.
"ROAR!" The Tyranitar turned its furious gaze on Basalt. Master Axel and the Director immediately launched their attack, intercepting it. They had to hold it off, even if only for a minute.
"Camerupt, Fissure!"
"Charizard, Solar Beam!"
BOOM!
The ground split open, and the sky lit up with a brilliant beam of solar energy. The world seemed to tremble.
The two Mega Evolved Pokémon, their power now temporarily on par with an Elite-level's, were just barely able to hold their own against the enraged Tyranitar.
"One day," Basalt thought, looking back at the distant, raging battle as Bronzong carried him away, "I will stand before you as an equal, and I will defeat you."
The Sandstorm was so thick now that he could no longer see the battle on the ground. A few moments later, as they cleared the storm's edge, he saw the Chandelure pause, gather the sunlight, and fire a massive Solar Beam, like an artillery shell, back towards the battlefield.
"That must be the signal that we're clear," Bronzong's voice came through.
A series of massive explosions rocked the desert behind them. The ground shook, and the sand buckled and churned like boiling water. Then, suddenly, the explosions stopped, replaced by the Tyranitar's endless, furious roars.
A few moments later, the Director's Tropius flew towards them, carrying both Masters. Behind them, the Mega Charizard X followed, its body covered in wounds, panting heavily.
"Director, Master Axel, are you alright?" Basalt asked.
"I'm alive," Axel sighed, "but my Pokémon are all out of commission. I'll be damned! What the hell is wrong with that Tyranitar? Why did it suddenly go berserk? I've met it at least a dozen times. It's never been like this."
Basalt just shrunk back, not knowing what to say. He couldn't possibly tell them the truth.
"Well... you know... fatherly love and all that," he mumbled, clutching his spatial bag tightly. Don't look at me. Don't ask me. I don't know anything.
