Chapter 18 - 18 Two goats and a bridge

There was a wooden bridge on a narrow mountain path. It was so narrow that only one animal could pass at a time.

One day, a goat was coming from one end of the bridge, and another goat was coming from the other. The two came to a head right in the middle of the bridge. Since the bridge was narrow, one of the goats had to go back and give way.

The first goat said: "Get out of my way! I came to this end first."

The second goat said: "No, you go back! My village is closer, let me pass quickly."

The two argued a lot. Then they stood stubbornly and lowered their horns towards each other. In anger, both of them started to gore each other on the bridge. But the bridge was narrow and there was a deep gorge below. In the scuffle, both goats lost their balance and fell into the gorge below. Both were seriously injured.

If either of them had stepped back even a little, both could have passed unharmed. But now regret was in vain.

Moral: Stubbornness and ego lead to destruction. Sometimes backing down, cooperating, and compromising are better than foolish fights. Mutual understanding can avoid many difficulties in life.
