Chapter 17 - 17 Elephants and poisonous flies

Near a village in the forest, there was a river. A magnificent elephant used to come to bathe in the river every day. The elephant was very calm and loved by everyone. But near a watercourse on the bank of the river, there lived a large colony of poisonous flies. Those flies were very annoying. Whenever the elephant entered the river, the flies would sit on its dark, hot body and sting it. Although the elephant was great, it could not drive away the small flies. Its skin was very thick, yet the sting was painful.

The elephant often pleaded with the flies: "Friends, I have only come to cool down a little. Why are you tormenting me?" But the flies mocked: "What is the use of being so big? This is our kingdom!"

One day, a small squirrel was watching all this from a tree. It felt sorry for the elephant. He went to the elephant and said: "Your Majesty, I know a trick. Before you enter the river tomorrow, fill your trunk with enough water. When the flies come to sit on you, spray them with water. Soak them!"

The elephant tried this trick. The next day, when the flies came, he sprayed a powerful jet of water from his trunk. The flies got caught in the water storm and flew away with the wind. The soaked flies could not come back. Thus, the little squirrel's intelligence solved the big elephant's problem.

Lesson: Don't look at the size of the problem, but act wisely and tactfully. Sometimes even a humble and small friend can be a big help.
