"You think you're a failure?" My voice cracked with disbelief. "You're absolutely incredible. Your business empire, your success, your reputation—if someone like you counts as a failure, then what does that make the rest of us?"
I caught myself before saying something embarrassing and quickly added, "I mean, you're being way too hard on yourself."
Mack Ben's expression grew serious. "Everything I've accomplished stands on the foundation my family built. Without their legacy, their connections, their name—I'd be nothing special."
His humility stunned me. Here was a man who commanded respect across the city, who could make or break fortunes with a single decision, and he spoke about himself like he was ordinary.
"That's what makes my mother see me as such a disappointment."
