Freya's POV
Staring at my phone screen, hot tears streamed down my cheeks without warning.
Katie's earlier words echoed through my mind like a haunting melody. She was right about one thing - if I kept my son in complete darkness about his father, never allowing them to meet or acknowledge each other, it would be deeply unfair to him. Perhaps even heartless.
No matter how devoted a mother I tried to be, I could never fill the void left by an absent father's love. And from everything I had witnessed, Mack Ben possessed the qualities of an exceptional father.
I wiped my face and texted back: Almost there.
Standing outside the apartment building, my courage abandoned me completely. I had only lived in this neighborhood briefly before disappearing two years ago. The landscaping looked different now, updated facilities dotted the complex. I wandered aimlessly around the entrance, nearly losing my way entirely until Katie's call forced me to summon whatever bravery remained.
