I cannot tell if remaining unmarried brings me peace or happiness, yet Mack remains frozen in time, prepared to sweep back into my shattered existence at any moment.
Perhaps he fears that marriage would mean the next news of me might reveal my struggles, my solitude, leaving him torn between rekindling what we had and honoring his family obligations.
These thoughts consumed me as I finished bathing my son and tucked him into bed, then wandered back to the living room.
Katie stood awake on the balcony, gazing at the city lights below.
When she noticed my approach, she turned with surprise. "Even overseas, the New Year celebration feels so vibrant and alive."
I joined her at the railing. "Chinese communities exist everywhere. Those far from home hold these traditions even closer to their hearts."
"Is my godson sleeping peacefully?" Katie asked.
"Finally. He skipped his afternoon rest, so bedtime came early tonight. At least now I have a moment to breathe."
