The Bronx was getting torn apart. Buildings smashed, streets cratered, but there were still Baymax robots down there in the ruins, using their soft bodies to shield whoever they were protecting. Still looked cute as hell while they patched people up with field medical skills that made survivors feel like they'd just been found by angels in a war zone.
Problem was, medical robots weren't built for this. The Chitauri energy cannons kept picking them off.
But it wasn't just the robots doing rescue work anymore. Mutants with all kinds of weird powers were out there too, wearing white uniforms with Baymax logos. They worked the areas outside the main evacuation routes, finding people hiding in buildings and getting them to safety.
"Hey, you alright?" Bobby Drake asked some woman with messed-up hair after he'd just turned a Chitauri into a popsicle.
"I... yeah. Thank you. Jesus, thank you so much." She was shaking, staring at where the alien had been about to run her through with its energy spear.
"Don't have a Baymax robot?" Bobby looked at the few people clustered around her—they looked lost.
"I did," she said, trying to catch her breath. "It got destroyed protecting me. Don't know this area well, couldn't find the evacuation route."
"No worries. I'm heading there now—follow me." Bobby spun around and froze another Chitauri that was diving at them.
"Thank you!" She was practically crying with relief.
Bobby kept laying down ice barriers as they moved, freezing aliens and clearing paths for civilians. Other mutants were doing the same in their sectors—some of the weaker ones teamed up with armored Baymax units for backup.
"There's the main group," Bobby said when they reached a street corner. "Just stay with that crowd. Portal's at the end—it'll get you somewhere safe."
She could see the main evacuation route—thousands of people moving together while flying Baymax units kept the sky mostly clear overhead.
"You're not coming?"
"Gotta head back. More people still trapped out there." Bobby was already turning to leave.
BOOM!
Another blast nearby sent everyone diving. "Move! Get to the main street!" someone yelled, and the whole group ran for the larger crowd.
Once she joined the main evacuation, this weird calm settled over her. Even with energy bolts flying everywhere, none of them were getting through to the people below.
The crowd flowed like a river toward Thirty-seventh Street, where this huge circular device sat in the middle of the square. The center swirled with rainbow light, big letters spelling 'PORTAL' on the side. Sign next to it said: "Unit tested and verified. Transportation to secure area. Do not panic."
Some people were hesitating, but as the flow kept moving through, most just took a deep breath and stepped in.
When she walked through, everything went black for a split second. Then she was standing on green grass, looking at some old castle in the distance.
"Information sheet," a kid said, coming up with a paper. "Explains where you are."
"Thanks, honey." She took it, watched him head to the next person. The sheet laid it all out—Baymax Company and mutants had rescued them, this was the Xavier Institute, and she could watch the invasion live on her phone if she wanted updates.
From here, she could just barely see that blue hole in the sky over the city.
"At least it's safe," she said to herself.
Back in the chaos, the defense system was actually working. Armored Baymax units held the evacuation routes while mutants swept the outer areas, finding survivors and directing them to safety. Thousands of people getting teleported away from the war zone.
But the Chitauri kept coming. More and more of them. The defensive lines were starting to buckle.
Then finally—finally—the Avengers showed up. Thor was off having his brother issues with Loki at Stark Tower, but Cap and the others started hitting back hard with Baymax support.
Best part? Soon as the superheroes arrived, all the Chitauri seemed to focus on them instead. Made the rescue work a hell of a lot easier.
Time dragged on. Civilians kept getting evacuated, the army threw up a containment line at 39th Street to stop the spread, and the center of the Bronx basically became a superhero battleground.
That's when something really big started coming through the portal.
This thing... looked like someone had crossed a mechanical whale with a spaceship and then made it the size of a city block. Had to be a Leviathan—the Chitauri's big guns. The thing just swam through the air between buildings like they were water, and Chitauri soldiers started pouring out of it like angry bees.
