Chapter 9 - Chapter 9:Level Up

Ethan dodged and rolled to the side. Narrowly escaping getting speared by the monster. Run, that was the only thought occurring in Ethan's mind. He turned his heels and ran. The creature let out a groan before it stood up and began chasing, quickly catching up. Ethan knew he couldn't fight it, not yet. It would destroy him.

He ran across the hallways, adrenaline fueling him. Behind him, the corrupted snarling ran, flaying its arm wildly in an attempt to catch him. This is bad. He thought it was faster than I. I will eventually get caught, he thought with panic. He took a sharp corner, nearly stumbling, the corrupted couldn't see, so it ran headfirst into the wall, causing cracks to appear. With a pained grunt, it rose, letting out a deep groan.

Ethan continued running, he knew that wouldn't stop the creature for long, they were relentless. His mind worked in overdrive, thinking about how the hell he would escape. In front of him, a fire extinguisher and a staircase, suddenly, an idea popped into his mind. He ran, removing it from the wall. He stood holding it in front of him. He only had one shot at this; miss it and he was as good as dead. His body tensed. The extinguisher was heavy in his hand, and his hand trembled as he struggled to hold it steady.

A roar punctuated the silence in the corridor. The creature was approaching, Ethan took a step back, the thought of running crossing his mind once again, but he steeled his nerves; he couldn't outrun it, this was the only choice. The creature turned a corner once again, smashing into the wall. It stood up, its head flailing sideways, trying to locate Ethan.

"Right here bitch." Ethan said with a grin plastered on his face. His eyes were tinged with madness.

The creature spun back, staring in the direction of Ethan. With a click, it stood up and it began sprinting full speed at Ethan. His eyes widened; he needed to time it perfectly. Time seemed to slow as he could see the creature in great detail. He let out a deep breath as he raised the extinguisher.

The creature lunged. NOW, Ethan thought. He swerved, dodging to the side right as the creature jumped at him, its hands spread apart with its mouth open. He swung the extinguisher by the handle, bringing it a full hundred and eight degrees, hitting the creature right in the spine as he launched it down the stairs. The corrupted tumbled down the stairs with pained groans.

The creature lay at the bottom of the stairs, its limbs broken, unable to move. Ethan slumped to the ground, his chest heaving in and out. He had just almost died, yet why was he smiling? He leaned his head back on the wall, catching his breath. But he couldn't rest for long, more corrupted would be coming attracted by the sound.

He stood up, his legs weak, but he pressed on. A clicking noise. Ethan froze, no way it was still alive, he thought. He grabbed the extinguisher once more, slowly walking to the edge of the stairs. The corrupted was still alive, as it was flailing around trying to stand up, but it couldn't; the fall had broken all its limbs, leaving it immobile. Ethan let out a sigh of relief. Corrupted were much more durable than humans, so the fall that could have killed any man just left if immobile.

His eyes narrowed, time to finish the job, he thought. He descended the stairs slowly, the extinguisher raised. He arrived at the creature, and it looked much uglier up close. It snapped its mouth, which could easily shatter bone at Ethan, but it couldn't do much more than that. Ethan raised the extinguisher high in the air. Then brought it down onto its head, denting it. The creature let out a pained moan, but Ethan didn't care; he brought it down repeatedly, bashing the creature's head until it burst. Ethan began to pant, sweat dropping from his forehead, his pants and shirt now stained with the foul-smelling liquid of the corrupted body.

Suddenly, a notification rang, the system panel appearing

+400 exp acquired. Congratulations, you have leveled up!.

Ethan smiled. How could he forget?
