Chapter 118 - Chapter 118: Crossing the Galactic Divide

However, there was one significant obstacle that troubled them greatly, and that was the unique method of faster-than-light travel that HK-47 had described—hyperspace technology. This system was fundamentally different from anything they had ever encountered before, and it apparently prevented conventional entry into or departure from star systems using the familiar cosmic jump points and quantum tunneling methods that connected different regions of their known universe.

The navigation charts and stellar maps they had been given were over four thousand years old. While this might seem like a relatively brief period in terms of cosmic time scales, four millennia was still an incredibly long span for galactic civilizations, and countless significant events, wars, political changes, and technological developments could have completely transformed the landscape of HK-47's home galaxy during his extended deactivation.

Regardless of these potential complications, the Guardians found themselves feeling more than just casual curiosity about this opportunity. When they really thought about it carefully, there was genuinely no compelling reason not to explore this completely new and unknown galaxy. After all, they had already accomplished far more in their adventures together than simply searching for and destroying the remaining seeds of Ego's cosmic expansion project.

Everything changed dramatically when Kraglin suddenly remembered something critically important from his past.

Kraglin recalled that during the years when the ancient Celestial being known as Ego had been systematically collecting his scattered offspring from across the universe, he had provided both him and Yondu with several sets of coordinates for various locations throughout the cosmos. One of these coordinate sets had specifically referenced HK-47's home galaxy—what the ancient droid referred to as simply "the galaxy far, far away."

"Kraglin, why in the hell did you never mention this incredibly important information before?!" Star-Lord demanded with obvious shock and growing frustration.

"I'm really sorry, Quill, but honestly, Yondu and I completely forgot about those old coordinates after we started traveling with you and the team," Kraglin admitted with genuine remorse and embarrassment.

Star-Lord was absolutely stunned by this revelation. He slowly sank back into his pilot's seat, finding it difficult to process the implications of what he had just learned.

"Are you telling me that I might actually have other half-brothers and half-sisters still alive somewhere in that galaxy?" Star-Lord asked in a voice barely above a whisper.

"It's definitely possible, Quill. But we have absolutely no way of knowing whether they're still alive after all this time, or what condition they might be in if they did survive."

Star-Lord tried his best to maintain his emotional composure, but he couldn't prevent a few tears from escaping as the reality of the situation hit him. The possibility that he might have real biological family members—an actual blood-related family beyond his connection to the father he despised—was both thrilling and terrifying to contemplate.

Now one thing had become absolutely certain: Star-Lord was determined to locate and reunite with any half-siblings that Ego might have abandoned in that distant galaxy.

Sensing Peter's thoughts, Mantis found herself caught in the same wave of joy. Maybe, after they find another of Peter's half-siblings, she'll finally gather the courage to tell him the truth—that she's his half-sister too.

"Then let's go explore the unknown," Star-Lord declared with renewed determination and purpose.

"But how exactly are we going to reach HK-47's galaxy safely?" Gamora asked with practical concern. "Even though we've successfully integrated some of the Ebon Hawk's technology and systems into the Benatar, we still need a reliable method to traverse that incredible distance without getting lost in the void. Not to mention the enormous fuel costs and the time it would require to make such a journey using conventional propulsion."

"Hmm..." Kraglin said thoughtfully, stroking his chin as he stared intently at the holographic map projection floating before them. "While I was studying this mysterious energy barrier that seems to surround their galaxy, I noticed something particularly interesting."

He walked over to the northern section of the display, approaching an area that was marked as "Unknown Regions" on the ancient charts, where there appeared to be a single distinctive marker or indicator.

"Look here," Kraglin said, manipulating the controls to zoom in on the specific location he was indicating. "I'm not entirely sure if this represents some kind of data corruption or mapping error, but from my analysis of the stellar cartography..."

"That could very well be our way inside," Gamora concluded, and Kraglin nodded with growing confidence.

"So what exactly are we planning to do about this situation?" Drax asked with his characteristic directness. "There don't appear to be any universal jump points or quantum gates in this galaxy that we could use for safe entry."

"Attempting to cross that energy barrier directly would be far too dangerous and unpredictable for us to risk," Star-Lord added with obvious concern.

"Technical Suggestion: I believe that if you could somehow combine the quantum jump capabilities of your current vessel with the hyperdrive technology from my ancient ship, the resulting hybrid system might provide the key to bypassing the barrier and entering the galaxy safely," HK-47 proposed.

Rocket nodded with obvious approval and excitement. "Well, that sounds like a solid plan to me. Let's get started on this engineering project right away."

And so, with a single clear objective in mind, the Guardians of the Galaxy and their newest mechanical team member began the incredibly challenging and time-consuming work of essentially creating an entirely new faster-than-light drive system. This hybrid technology would have to successfully combine the most advanced aspects of their existing quantum jump drive with the ancient but sophisticated hyperdrive technology recovered from the Ebon Hawk.

The engineering process had taken significantly longer than any of them had originally anticipated, requiring weeks of careful calibration, testing, and fine-tuning. However, in the end, their efforts had been successful, and they were now finally ready to make their journey to HK-47's home galaxy.

"Cheerful statement: Oh, how utterly delightful! After a mere four thousand years, I am finally returning to that overrated metal hive known as Coruscant. I can barely contain my simulated excitement at the thought of those blinding lights and overcrowded meatbag-infested streets once more."

"What exactly is Coruscant supposed to be?" Star-Lord asked with curiosity.

"Factual Answer: It serves as the capital world of the entire galaxy and the seat of galactic government."

"So I'm guessing there are a lot of politicians and bureaucrats there?" Peter asked with obvious distaste.

"Melancholy Confirmation: Sadly, yes. I have been assigned to numerous assassination missions on Coruscant over the years, but I came to realize that no matter how many corrupt politicians I managed to eliminate, there would always be more to replace them."

"That sounds like absolute hell," Star-Lord commented with sympathy.

"Observation: Indeed, Master Quill. It seems an obscene amount of tedious labor awaits me upon our arrival. I can hardly contain my simulated anticipation."

"Alright everyone, you'd better grab onto the nearest handholds and brace yourselves," Rocket announced, his expression becoming grim and intensely focused on the technical readouts before him.

Ahead of them, the Guardians could see their intended destination, which appeared similar to any other cosmic phenomenon they had encountered during their travels together as a team. They had navigated through many such interstellar anomalies and spatial distortions both before and after they had first formed their unlikely partnership.

There were actually several smaller satellite galaxies orbiting around the larger main galaxy, though this type of gravitational arrangement wasn't particularly unusual or noteworthy in their experience.

"Does anyone have any final words or thoughts before we make this jump?" Star-Lord asked.

"I am Groot!" the tree-like being declared with obvious enthusiasm.

Several members of the team gave Groot distinctly unimpressed looks in response to his comment.

"I just hope we don't end up vomiting our entire lunch like what happened the last time we attempted something this ambitious," Gamora said with obvious concern.

"God, I hope not. I felt absolutely terrible for hours after we made that jump to reach Ego's planet," Kraglin grimaced and visibly paled at the unpleasant memory.

"Everyone get ready for this," Star-Lord commanded with authority. "Rocket, HK, make absolutely certain that our trajectory calculations are correct."

"Understood, Captain," both replied in unison.

"Gamora, Drax, make sure the jump drive is operating at maximum power output. We definitely don't want to take any unnecessary chances with this attempt."

As each crew member prepared to fulfill their assigned responsibilities, Rocket began maneuvering their ship to accelerate toward the distant galaxy and the mysterious entry point they had identified.

"Anomaly detected, thirty degrees to the northeast," Kraglin reported from his navigation station.

"Acknowledged and adjusting course accordingly."

The Benatar automatically corrected its trajectory and continued flying directly along their carefully planned approach vector.

"Quill," Drax suddenly spoke in a noticeably nervous voice that was quite uncharacteristic for the normally fearless warrior.

Star-Lord didn't need to look at Drax to understand his concern, because he could see exactly what had caught everyone's attention at the same moment.

"What... what the hell is that thing?" Rocket asked with obvious nervousness and growing alarm.

A moment later, they activated their hybrid jump drive... and the instant they passed through what appeared to be a brilliant blue hexagonal portal:

"I immediately regret this decision!"

"I feel like my brain is going to explode out of my skull!"

"I am Groot!" the tree being groaned with obvious distress.

A single spacecraft had successfully passed through some kind of geometric portal and was now floating apparently aimlessly in completely unfamiliar space.

"Sound off, everyone! Who's still alive and conscious?" Star-Lord called out weakly.

"I will never... never attempt something like that again," Gamora moaned from her position.

"I desperately need to lie down somewhere for several hours," Drax added with uncharacteristic vulnerability.

Mantis quickly unbuckled her safety restraints and rushed toward the nearest bathroom facility, obviously fighting severe nausea.

"Confused Statement: I do not understand what is wrong with all of you organic beings. Perhaps it is all that biological fluid circulating through your systems that is causing these adverse reactions," HK-47 observed with mechanical detachment.

"Uh... Captain," Kraglin groaned from his station, "since we didn't die horribly in the process, I'm assuming that means we actually succeeded, right?"

Star-Lord groaned loudly and staggered unsteadily to his feet from the pilot's seat. When he looked up through the main viewport, he could see something that made his heart race with excitement despite his physical discomfort.

"There's a planet directly ahead of us!"

"Oh... okay... so what exactly do we do now?" Rocket asked weakly.

"Right now? I think we should all take a well-deserved break and recover from this ordeal."

There wasn't much more to be said about their current condition. All the Guardians of the Galaxy quickly collapsed from exhaustion, either remaining slumped in their seats or falling to the deck plating. Even HK-47 ran an internal diagnostic scan and discovered that several of his systems had been damaged during the transition, requiring him to shut down temporarily for automated maintenance and repair procedures.

The Benatar continued drifting silently through space, carrying its crew of strange and extraordinary individuals into a distant new galaxy. Unbeknownst to them, somewhere in this vast stellar realm, their old friends and allies were continuing their own adventures and facing challenges they could never have imagined.
