Senator Riyo Chuchi felt an overwhelming sense of relief as the seemingly endless Senate session finally came to a close. Honestly, the entire proceeding had felt completely pointless and bureaucratic, and Riyo found herself wondering how her mentor and dear friend Padmé Amidala had managed to endure years of such tedious political theater without losing her sanity entirely.
As she gathered her datapads and prepared to leave the chamber, she felt a gentle, encouraging pat on her shoulder. Looking up, she saw the distinguished figure of Cham Syndulla, the new Twi'lek representative who had recently succeeded the corrupt Orn Free Taa as senator from Ryloth, giving her an understanding and sympathetic expression.
Cham had proven to be remarkably independent and principled since assuming his senatorial duties, and he had already gained considerable attention by publicly criticizing the questionable methods the Republic had been employing throughout this devastating war. In many ways, Cham represented a much-needed breath of fresh air in the stagnant, smoke-filled chambers of galactic politics. He consistently challenged established norms and bureaucratic procedures, and he was one of the few senators who possessed the courage to directly confront the empty rhetoric and meaningless posturing that dominated most political discourse. Unlike many of his colleagues, Cham seemed genuinely committed to taking meaningful action rather than simply sitting around engaging in endless debate while accomplishing nothing of substance.
It was hardly surprising, therefore, that he had quickly formed strong friendships and political alliances with senators like Padmé Amidala, Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, and Riyo herself. Together, they had created their own informal circle of reform-minded legislators who actually cared about making positive changes in the galaxy.
Riyo gave Cham a grateful smile and continued making her way down the long corridor toward her private office in the Senate building, her mind already shifting from the frustrations of politics to the more pleasant aspects of her evening plans.
As she approached her office door, she noticed a familiar flash of distinctive silver hair positioned directly in front of her entrance.
Blinking with surprise, Riyo felt the corners of her mouth automatically lift into a genuine smile as she approached the obviously bored-looking Avenger who was casually leaning against her closed office door with characteristic nonchalance.
Clearing her throat softly to announce her presence, Riyo successfully caught the young man's attention.
"Mr. Maximoff," Riyo said with obvious warmth and cheerfulness, "what a pleasant surprise to see you here again. What can I do for you today?"
Over the past several weeks, Pietro Maximoff—known throughout the galaxy as Quicksilver—had become an increasingly frequent presence in Riyo's daily routine, whether through carefully planned encounters or seemingly coincidental meetings that happened far too often to be truly accidental.
Riyo was certainly no stranger to this type of persistent romantic behavior. During her years attending advanced political studies on her homeworld of Pantora, there had been several young men approximately her age who had employed similar tactics to capture her attention and win her favor. To be completely honest, most of them had failed to make any lasting impression on her. It wasn't that she had been deliberately cruel or dismissive toward them, but rather that she had been intensely focused on her academic studies and career preparation at the time.
She had been partially grateful that her selection as senator for the Pantoran people had effectively eliminated the problem of unwanted suitors, since most potential romantic partners had been intimidated by her high-profile political position and the enormous responsibilities that came with representing an entire world in the Galactic Senate.
It was remarkably easy for Riyo to become so completely absorbed in her senatorial duties that she frequently forgot to make time for basic personal needs like eating proper meals or maintaining social relationships. She often felt as though she never had sufficient time to seriously consider romantic relationships or personal happiness. Between her obligations to the Pantoran people and her broader responsibilities to the Republic, Riyo sometimes felt as if she were practically married to her demanding career.
But now, after everything she had witnessed during her relatively brief but eventful tenure as a senator during this brutal galactic war, she found herself honestly longing to discover new ways to escape from what increasingly seemed like a meaningless and frustrating political position.
That was when Pietro Maximoff had entered her life and completely changed her perspective on many things.
The young Avenger certainly bore no resemblance to any of the suitors she had encountered during her earlier years, and she remained genuinely uncertain whether that difference represented a positive or negative development in her life.
However, if there was one defining characteristic that had become unmistakably clear during the relatively short time she had known Quicksilver, it was his absolutely unwavering persistence and determination.
Much like Cham Syndulla, Pietro seemed to operate according to his own independent principles and moral code. He had developed a remarkable habit of appearing to brighten her day whenever she least expected his company, or at minimum contacting her through various communication channels when his duties with the other Avengers prevented him from visiting in person.
Pietro was undeniably brash, cocky, and arrogant to a certain extent, and he occasionally displayed moments of insecurity and self-doubt. But he was also surprisingly casual and approachable in many situations, quite different from the more serious and focused Clint Barton whom he frequently mentioned in their conversations. Pietro had mentioned on several occasions that many of his jokes and humorous observations came directly from that particular veteran Avenger.
It was obvious to anyone who paid attention that Quicksilver looked up to Clint Barton with tremendous respect and admiration, viewing him either as an older brother figure or perhaps as an uncle-like mentor.
Although Pietro made considerable efforts to hide his romantic feelings, Riyo had definitely noticed his obvious attraction to her. Cham Syndulla had shared detailed stories about Pietro's heroic actions during the recent crisis on Ryloth, and the Twi'lek leader had told her that Quicksilver was a man of exceptional moral character and genuine compassion. According to Cham's accounts, Pietro had done everything within his considerable power to help the suffering inhabitants of Ryloth, providing extra food supplies for the hungry, medicine for those who needed medical attention most desperately, and even small toys and gifts for the children who had lost so much during the conflict.
When Riyo had met Cham's young daughter Hera during a diplomatic reception, the little girl had proudly displayed her favorite doll, which she had carefully modified and decorated to resemble Quicksilver in his distinctive blue and silver costume.
It had been quite amusing and endearing to witness a confident, powerful man like Pietro become genuinely shy and embarrassed, desperately trying to hide his red cheeks whenever anyone brought up that particular heartwarming incident.
"Oh, nothing too important, Riyo," Pietro said with practiced casualness, though she could detect the underlying nervousness in his voice. "I just wanted to hear about how terrible your Senate meeting was today."
Riyo Chuchi simply sighed heavily and rubbed her temples where a headache was beginning to form, then gestured for him to follow her as she unlocked and entered her private office.
"That bad, huh?" Pietro asked with genuine sympathy as he observed her obvious exhaustion and frustration.
"Unfortunately, yes. It was absolutely dreadful," she confirmed wearily.
"Well, that's the nature of war, I suppose," Pietro observed with surprising wisdom. "A lot of people profit tremendously from ongoing conflict, even while many others desperately want the fighting to end as quickly as possible. Everyone involved is ultimately looking out for their own interests above all else."
Riyo looked at the young Avenger thoughtfully for a long moment before asking, "Your homeworld... Sokovia, correct? Was it also devastated by war and conflict?"
"Too many times to count," Pietro replied with obvious pain and bitterness, walking past her to stare out the large window overlooking the Coruscant cityscape. "All my sister Wanda and I have ever known throughout our entire lives is war, violence, and constant conflict. My hometown... it's been bombed and destroyed so many times that I've honestly forgotten what it looked like during peaceful times."
Riyo sighed with deep sympathy, retrieved two glasses from her personal cabinet, poured a small amount of quality Corellian brandy into each one, and walked over to offer him one of the drinks.
"Thank you," Pietro said gratefully, accepting the glass with obvious appreciation.
"Isn't that your favorite flavor?" Riyo asked, remembering his preferences from previous conversations.
Pietro gave her a genuine, warm smile that made her heart skip slightly. "My enhanced metabolism has a strange side effect when it comes to alcohol. It's virtually impossible for me to get a proper hangover."
"Are you saying you can't get drunk at all?" Riyo asked with obvious curiosity and amusement.
"Well, I could probably try..." Pietro shrugged with characteristic humor. "But I think it would require several gallons of the strongest liquor available. Believe me, I attempted it once during my younger and more foolish days, visiting multiple bars throughout Sokovia, and they ended up banning me from every establishment for life."
Riyo shook her head and laughed genuinely for the first time in days. "What happened after that disaster?"
Pietro scratched his cheek slightly with embarrassment as he recalled the uncomfortable memory. "After Wanda discovered what I had done, she used her powers to trap me inside the walls of our apartment for several hours. I was forced to watch her favorite television programs with no possibility of escape. It was absolutely torture."
"Watching shows couldn't have been that terrible, could it?" Riyo asked with amused disbelief.
"If you knew what kind of entertainment Wanda enjoys, you would completely understand how genuinely painful that punishment was," Pietro replied with exaggerated horror.
"Now I'm intrigued. Tell me about it," Riyo said, settling comfortably into her chair with obvious interest.
"Well... for decades, there have been various nostalgic television programs broadcast on our homeworld that were originally produced many years ago. Wanda has always been particularly fond of these shows from sixty or seventy years in the past. Most of them featured idealized sitcom families with stay-at-home mothers, which I personally find completely ridiculous and unrealistic. What bothered me even more was that she had memorized all the dialogue and would recite the lines word-for-word as the episodes played."
"That actually sounds rather endearing," Riyo said with genuine warmth, chuckling softly at the mental image. "I'm genuinely curious about Earth culture in general. You mention various aspects of your homeworld constantly during our conversations, yet I've never actually seen any of these movies, shows, or cultural references you talk about so enthusiastically."
Pietro rubbed his chin thoughtfully and fell into deep concentration. "Well, you don't have access to Earth's satellite networks or broadcasting systems here, obviously..."
His eyes suddenly lit up with obvious excitement and inspiration. "But wait! I do have a personal collection of movies and shows stored on my devices. Hold on just one moment."
Whoosh
Riyo stepped back slightly, automatically bracing herself as Pietro suddenly accelerated to his superhuman speed. The powerful wind created by his rapid movement caused her carefully arranged hair to scatter in multiple directions.
After a few moments, she was able to skillfully re-tie her hair with practiced efficiency. This had obviously happened numerous times before, and Riyo said to herself with amused resignation, "I'm definitely getting used to this by now."
Whoosh
Pietro returned almost instantly, carrying a small electronic device. "Because of our limited technological compatibility, we'll have to watch everything on this small screen," he explained while quickly scrolling through his extensive collection of entertainment files.
"Wait a minute," Pietro said, suddenly pausing as if he had remembered something critically important. "We're still missing some essential components for the full experience."
"What exactly?" Riyo asked with growing curiosity.
"Snacks. You can't properly watch movies without appropriate snacks."
Whoosh
Fortunately, Riyo's hair remained mostly intact this time around.
Whoosh
"Is there anything in particular you enjoy eating?" Pietro asked breathlessly.
"I'm sorry, what?" Riyo asked, still adjusting to his rapid transitions.
"Snacks and treats. Do you have any specific preferences or favorites?"
"Uh... I'm not really sure..."
"Ah, never mind then. I'll just get a little bit of everything available."
Whoosh
And then he disappeared once again.
Whoosh
Within minutes, Pietro had returned carrying a large basket filled with an impressive variety of snacks, treats, and beverages that he had purchased from nearby shops, vendors, and restaurants throughout the Senate district.
Pietro began operating his portable device, muttering complaints about how the small screen's holographic projector wasn't powerful enough to provide an optimal viewing experience.
"If it wouldn't be too much trouble, we could try connecting your device to my office's holographic display system and project the image onto the much larger screen," Riyo suggested helpfully.
Pietro's face brightened with obvious delight. "Oh, that's an excellent idea! Do you think the connection will actually work with our different technologies?"
Riyo considered the technical challenges thoughtfully. "I'm honestly not certain, but there's no harm in attempting it."
After several minutes of careful adjustment and technical experimentation, Pietro successfully connected his device to the control panel of her office's sophisticated holographic projector. To their mutual surprise and satisfaction, the connection worked perfectly.
Settling comfortably onto the plush sofa in her office, Riyo felt her entire body relaxing for the first time in weeks, and she breathed a deep sigh of relief and contentment.
She felt incredibly fortunate that she had no other appointments or obligations scheduled for the remainder of the day, as if the universe had either decided to finally grant her some time to enjoy herself, or had taken pity on the lonely, overworked woman she had become.
"What's this movie called again?" Riyo asked as colorful animated characters appeared on the holographic display.
"Toy Story," Pietro replied with obvious fondness. "It's one of the few films that I still genuinely enjoy watching even today."
When Riyo asked Pietro why he had chosen what appeared to be a children's movie from his extensive collection, he explained with surprising sincerity that it represented one of the few forms of entertainment from his homeworld that contained no warfare, no political struggle, and no violence—just peace, happiness, and the simple joy of friendship.
As they settled in to enjoy the movie together, sharing snacks and quiet conversation, both Riyo and Pietro found themselves discovering something they had been missing for far too long: the simple pleasure of genuine companionship and the beginning of something that might grow into something much deeper than friendship.
