Chapter 291 - Chapter 291: Advancing Deeper

How could Gu You not tell? Long Yuxue was clearly competitive, and beneath that composed surface, she had a subtle desire to prove herself against him.

He glanced at his Blood God Ring. His contribution points had increased by another fifty.

To Gu You, the only thing bothering him now was how few abyssal creatures there seemed to be in this narrow passage.

He pressed on, entering the next corridor. But just as he was about to step inside, his senses flared. Something was different. Something dangerous.

With his Spirit Domain–level spiritual power, the anomaly was instantly clear. Without hesitation, he thrust out his Golden Dragon Spear. A deep dragon's roar echoed through the narrow space as a coiled golden dragon surged forward, unleashed along the path of his spear.

Boom!

A powerful shockwave erupted, slamming a shadowy figure into the depths of the passage. Gu You only caught a glimpse of a pair of blood-red eyes before it vanished.

Once he stepped fully into the corridor, he could see clearly—it was an incredibly strange-looking creature. Its body was spindle-shaped, and it had six razor-sharp claws.

Gu You quickly realized what it was—something Long Yuxue had described: a Six-Clawed Fiend, a type of abyssal monster known for its stealth and ambush capabilities.

The creature's defense was formidable. Even after taking a full hit from Gu You's spear, it barely looked injured. Its six claws stabbed directly into the floor, and in the next moment, a field of sharp spikes shot up from beneath Gu You's feet.

Each spike was slender and gleamed dangerously, carrying a destructive aura.

Boom!

A series of explosions erupted as the spikes impacted.

Farther down the tunnel, the Six-Clawed Fiend's red eyes abruptly narrowed.

It had landed its attack. But the man still stood where he was, completely unharmed. The only sound was that of the spikes shattering.

'Was that supposed to tickle?'

Gu You let out a cold snort. With a stomp of his right foot, the spikes around him all shattered at once. In the same breath, his Golden Dragon Spear shot forward in a flash of gold.

The Six-Clawed Fiend, thrown into the air by the tremor of his stomp, was nailed directly to the floor.

Golden light pulsed along the spear. When it returned to Gu You's hand, it delivered the energy it had just absorbed straight into his body.

Glancing down at the double-tipped spear in his hand, Gu You couldn't help but marvel. With this weapon, he had nearly endless combat stamina.

It was like having an external soul core.

Then again... he hadn't even formed his actual soul core yet.

Most Soul Masters began forming their first soul core upon reaching the Soul Sage level—provided they had the necessary talent. Soul cores allowed for endless replenishment of soul power and made a huge difference in high-level battles. The stronger the core, the greater the Soul Master's overall power.

The importance of soul cores couldn't be overstated. The legendary Spirit Ice Douluo, Huo Yuhao, had formed a complementary Yin-Yang soul core and was hailed as the greatest Limit Douluo in history.

It was only now that Long Yuxue caught up, entering the tunnel just in time to see the Six-Clawed Fiend being slain beneath Gu You's Golden Dragon Spear. She could've taken it down herself, but her specialty was long-range attacks. A frontal assault against such a heavily armored beast would've required a drawn-out fight.

She gave Gu You a thumbs up. "How does it feel?"

Gu You smiled. "Not quite satisfying enough."

Long Yuxue rolled her eyes. "Not satisfying? What, you want more? Let me warn you—those who die fast are always the arrogant ones. Don't overestimate yourself. We've had plenty of geniuses enter this corps before. Only the ones who survive are the real talents."

"I get it. Let's keep going." Gu You strode ahead.

Long Yuxue followed behind, her eyes drifting to his tall frame, his straight back, his white uniform, and the gleaming golden spear in his hand. Her thoughts became a little unfocused. Somehow, he looked almost exactly like the man she had envisioned countless times in her dreams.

But just as quickly, her father's warning echoed in her mind.

Yes, Gu You was brilliant—almost too brilliant. But with that brilliance came a burden no ordinary person could bear.

If she could, she'd rather he was a little less outstanding.

Unaware of her musings, Gu You pushed forward. Having slain one abyssal creature after another, each kill fueling him further, he moved with growing fervor.

Using his Purple Demon Eyes and powerful perception, he took down several more creatures as they appeared.

But reaching the next node took significantly longer than the last time. The creatures were getting stronger. No longer the weak Devourer Lizards—they were far tougher now.

Up ahead, light flickered at the tunnel's end. But just as he reached it, Gu You didn't rush out. Instead, he halted.

This node was far larger than the previous ones. But the aura leaking from within made him pause.

Though his stealth vest hid his presence, the moment he approached, he felt dozens of hostile auras lock onto him.

Inside the node, at least a hundred abyssal creatures awaited, representing more than a dozen species. It was nothing like the simple scene before with just one large Devourer Lizard.

Gu You frowned slightly. He wasn't afraid of the numbers, but abyssal creatures had bizarre abilities. One earlier had nearly devoured his Golden Dragon Spear by enveloping it in strange mist, nullifying its power.

Long Yuxue arrived behind him. "Don't rush in. Be careful. If needed, use your gear."

Gu You nodded, gripping his spear and standing guard at the threshold.

He didn't need to go to them. The abyssal creatures had already detected them and began charging toward the entrance.

Leading the charge were several Devourer Lizards, all significantly larger than the previous ones. Their scales flexed open and shut as they exhaled thick waves of grey mist toward him.

Gu You spun his spear with a flourish, forming a golden barrier in front of him. A surge of blood energy erupted, blasting the mist back.

Simultaneously, countless golden spear shadows shot forward.

The three closest lizards stiffened mid-charge, their bodies torn apart by the flurry of spear shadows.

Boom! Boom-boom!

Several precise sniper shots echoed from behind him. The Devourer Lizards, though not dead, had their eyes burst open one after another—critically wounded.

Long Yuxue had begun her assault.

Having a solid wall of muscle in front of you was every sniper's dream, and Gu You was more than qualified to be that wall.

Then another wave of abyssal creatures surged toward them, and most of them were—
