It all happened in the blink of an eye. One minute the forest was a paradise, and the next it was swallowed in a sea of fire.
Screams tore through the air. It was raw and frantic, as students scattered in every direction. They shoved and pushed each other in desperation, scrambling to hide under the massive tree where the flames did not reach. The world had turned to chaos so fast that Ryn hadn't even had time to think, let alone react.
Heat seared his skin. He squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for the fire that would consume him. Only it never came.
A golden barrier flared into existence before him, its surface gleaming like a shield forged from sunlight. His eyes snapped open in shock, the world bathed in its glow. The barrier wasn't cast by anyone else. It was coming from him. From the pendant around his neck.
The gem glowed a burning red, brighter than it ever had before.
Ryn froze.
