Veyr let out a heavy sigh, stepping closer. "Don't attack me, but no one can hear this," he muttered. "Keep your hands to yourself."
"No promises. If you try that rune magic on me again, I'll burn you in the blink of an eye."
"That won't happen," Veyr assured him, glancing around as if checking for eavesdroppers. "When you were out and Sylas was gone, I tracked Ryn to his home after learning he'd been invited back."
"Invited home? For what?" Kael's tone was impatient.
"Will you quit cutting me off?" Veyr snapped.
Kael frowned; he hated taking orders, but he nodded because this was about Ryn.
Veyr continued. "They planned to ship him out because of the emperor's issue and the damage it could cause their clan." He paused, scanning their surroundings again, then leaned in. "Sylas's mark was almost erased. I also found Ryn in a bad state." He lowered his voice to a whisper. "He used another rune."
