Chapter 2 - The Arcane Library - 2

After bathing herself followed by putting on her attire, Tsubasa narrowed closely at the looking glass.

She wore a red overcoat, navy blue khakis, a white long-sleeved button-up shirt, a beige v-neck cardigan, and a red bow tie to match. Her natural features; her hair was marigold with faint red streaks at the tips of her bangs, she did a little twirl to show that the back of her head which was tied back in a donut bun, she had wide-round ruby red eyes, sharp obsidian lashes, fair skin — combined with her stern, intimidating expression, made her presence striking….is what people would assume if she didn't look like a child. But Tsubasa was just reaching her twenties. She could drink out, take on guild quests; pretty much anything an adult could do. But supposedly due to her young appearance, many adults assume she's still a child.

And for a detective, she lacked the signature detective hat.

Lets just get this over shall we.

And thus, at the crack of her knuckles the cleaning commenced. Starting off was the bibliotheca, Tsubasa's domain.

Hidden away behind towering walls of ivy and ivy-covered stone, lies the heart of the Estate: a library like no other. To the untrained eye, it may appear simply as a well-maintained reading room, albeit larger than most, but to those with an eye for curiosity, it is so much more. The bibliotheca itself occupies an enormous wing of the estate, its floors polished wood that creaks softly beneath the feet of those who venture through its hallowed halls. The scent of old paper and wax hangs in the air, intermingling with the faint trace of jasmine from the garden outside, carried on a breeze that slips in through narrow windows. Tsubasa waltzed through two colossal bookshelves. They were crafted from dark mahogany and carved with intricate, swirling patterns that hint at something more arcane which stretched from floor to ceiling.

Tsubasa traced her fingers over the countless volumes that ranged from gilded and delicate to worn and scarred. But these shelves are not merely for holding grimoires; they acted as corridors leading deeper into the true heart of the bibliotheca— The Arcane.

At the far end of the hall, beyond the towering bookshelves, a wide archway beckoned Tsubasa into the true labyrinth of knowledge. The Arcane is a vast, dome-shaped room, its ceiling curving upwards like the inside of a great cathedral. The air was thick with magic, though subtle, woven into the very wood and stone of the space. The walls were lined with bookshelves that spiral up in layers, creating an endless sea of volumes; many had titles written on the side, some had numbers instead, whilst very few had nothing at all.

In the centre of the room, stands an ominous, cylindrical structure encased in crystal-clear glass. Tsubasa approached it slowly, examining its profile and status. The glass was no ordinary glass, but a rare material infused with magic that distorts the air around it, which created a shimmering effect. There was only a single grimoire that laid inside. A dark grimoire, bigger than the rest of the collection. It exuded a sinister aura, something truly tainted by darkness.

"Draughtbane, the Tome of Dark Magic…" Tsubasa extended out her arm to touch it—

"Ahk — everytime!" A large spark was the result of anyone who dared to go near that grimoire. Tsubasa shook her hand back and forth, swaying off the stinging sensation of the protection of that book. The tome radiates a dark ethereal glow that acted as the centre of attention in the Arcane in contrast to the pleasant and luminescent aura of the books that surrounded it. Averting her attention to the farthest corner of the Arcane, near an ornate archway lead to a small study room; a carved desk covered in many documents, other papers that had a reminiscence of a coffee spillage, staining the workload.

Tsubasa shrugged away, and drew out a wooden instrument. A piece of fine artisan wood-work from wand artists, it had many runic symbols carved onto it. The pinnacle object of what separated Magicians to other magic-users. A wand was the medium tool that bridged the world of mana and man, through a periscope channel that allowed spells to flow forth from the users imagination.

Ventus

A gust of air manifested as Tsubasa swung her wand around the room and swiftly manoeuvred groups of books at a time out the hallway. This was what Eleanore meant by 'cleaning' the place. Because the Detective Estate had been inactive for quite some time, it was time to move on, quite literally. Though the public would still knock on their doors every now and then, requesting a case to be solved; because to the public eye, the Detective Estate was still well in business. Though Tsubasa refused to allow the Kingdom or other forces lay their hands on these grimoires at all costs; they were precious relics and items that held dear to her predecessors and she would never allow anyone to wield them in respect to her fore masters. Thus relocating them was necessary. Just as Tsubasa was barely half-way through, but just as she was about to move more books from another shelf, she noticed a thudding sound.

There were faint sounds of someone knocking on the doors of the estate, which made Tsubasa halt her actions entirely, dropping the floating books in the air.

The sounds were different than if anyone had knocked on the other doors of the estate. These ones held a discrete tone that echoed from a material that differentiated from the standard wooden ones. Upon realisation that she knew what doors were being knocked on.

Tsubasa dashed her way to the front entrance to welcome…

"A customer, at last!"
