Chapter 48 - I Don't Want To Die

Danjin is quite the rare case even amongst the known Resonators in Solaris 3. Resonators are an uncontrollably piece of a puzzle that completes this world. Without them, humanity wouldn't have survived for so long.

But...

There's a reason why Resonators are occasionally feared as they have a risk of overclocking, causing destructions incomparable to their usual capability.

...Overclocking would even cause their death in the worst case scenario.

In any case, Danjin relied on her emotion to control her forte circuit.

...But that's not right.

Katsuri knows the reliability of that information was wrong.

Danjin's control over her own Forte is different.

The thing is, Danjin's forte depends on the amount of blood she had lost.

In which case, the longer a battle goes on, the stronger she would get.

True to that, the longer the battle goes on, the higher the risk of her overclocking would be.

But Danjin had never gone through overclock before. She's controlled her emotions and also had make sure to always end her battles as quickly as possible.

There is no Resonators out there crazy enough to seek overclocking by themselves.

And...

Katsuri watched as Danjin's eyes darkened, glowing brightly red in the now bright blue sky.

[1 minute.]

Katsuri had turned on the switch. Even as she was in full health, Danjin was currently at the edge of overclocking, her emotions hanging on by a thread.

Her heart quickened at the sight.

The irony of this situation that had flipped onto itself.

Two individual that had always trusted one another, now at the edge of killing one another.

"Come on, swing your blade. For the future of me and you, you'll have to cut off my head."

'Please don't.'

"In the worst case, the whole entirety of Ragunna would be destroyed off the face of Solaris 3. Do not hesitate and flick your wrist. Do what needed to be done."

'I don't want to die.'

The sounds of waves crashing against the shore of Ragunna echoed, signaling the arrival of the Whale.

"...Ah, there it is."

Katsuri turned her gaze up, towards the sky that she herself had opened.

"Even in the bright blue sky... The moon is quite beautiful today, don't you think?" The small orb in the sky, a fake moon that was simply a frequency of the past, it was visible.

The same way the moon on earth would occasionally appear even in the morning, so did the moon in Solaris 3.

'...Please don't make me taste death again.'

Danjin, no longer in her right mind, could only think of her past experiences.

That moment her village was raided, the moment she witnessed every single one of her loved ones being slaughtered... and the back of the demon she had swore to kill, the cause of her hatred.

Danjin's journey held two meanings:

1. Bring justice onto all evil doers.

2. Bring death onto the one that had killed her family.

And he is here, there's no doubt that this person in front of her was the cause of her family's death.

He's just standing there, hand spread while looking up at the sky.

But for some reason... her vision flickered.

But that doesn't hold anything back.

"You...!" A tone Katsuri is unfamiliar with escaped Danjin's lips.

"...Heh, you look like you've seen a ghost. What? Never realized how beautiful I truly am?" Katsuri provoked.

Danjin grabbed the hilt of her sword tightly... but it wasn't her own.

It was given to her by this demon.

"Now, now... We don't have much time. Just swing your blade already, you're making me yawn."

'...'

Without a second thought, Katsuri only saw a fragment of what happened.

Danjin had disappeared from where she was originally... and now, she's right in front of her, seemingly already finished swinging her blade.

But Katsuri couldn't see a thing.

Nor did she feel anything.

...but as moments passed, she could feel her neck ache. Her breathing became harder and harder to do as she felt her whole body going numb.

Absolute pain... and her last vision was that of Danjin's face.

Regret.

'...Huh?'

'Oi, didn't you say that she wouldn't remember me.' In her final moment of consciousness, Katsuri felt like time had slowed down.

Due to that, she began to give barrage of questions.

'I agreed with your plan because I thought she would smile instead.'

'Why is her face like that?'

'Where is her happy ending?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'Did you lie to me?'

'...It seems like this round was also a bust.'

Her vision became black as she witnessed it.

The sun rose in the distant.

Katsuri pressed a hand against her neck, as if reminiscing a past that had long gone by.

But it was just a moment ago.

'Hey.' Silently, she began to seek for answers.

'You're a bastard, you know that?' But it was insults.

'...' And then, silence.

'I know you're listening. Tell me, what is it that caused all this?'

'Was it really me?'

'Or was it someone else?'

...Suddenly, Katsuri had an inkling of idea. One that she was sure even the mysterious voice in her head wouldn't realized.

She held her hand towards the sun, materializing a pair of guns. 'So it is also guns in this life.'

Then, everything goes as it was once explained. (Go back to the halfway mark of the chapter Witness it, The Carnevale)

[A Threnodian, the cause of Humanity's suffering. Its very existence is like a parasite, existing only to cause destruction.]

Katsuri listened as the voice started to talk. "Yeah, yeah. Bla bla bla, my goal is to destroy the world or something. Whatever, I don't care. Just tell me something I don't know."

[...Then, did you know that all Threnodians embodies a concept to destroy humanity?]

"Hm? That's new. Sure, tell me."

[The reason Huanglong is haunted by war is due to the presence of the Threnodian, Ovathrax, who embodies War.]

[Rinascita, haunted by the Threnodian than embodies the concept of Assimilation, destroying Humanity from it's very core. The beliefs of all Ragunnesi.]

[Its name is Leviathan.]

[Katsuri, a Threnodian. The concept you embodies... Irony. For everything that is believed, there is an opposite that would destroy that trust.]

[For death is to never be defeated, the Irony is that someone could successfully use death to their advantage.]

[For a Resonator, their entire lives were spent trying to avoid overclocking, with just a snap of the finger... Their overclock would activate. The Irony in that is enough to cause destruction.]

[Memories, an item of the past that would never change.. The Irony in that is the untouchable past could no longer be trusted.]

[And so, you are Katsuri, a Threnodian embodying the concept of Irony.]

[Now, protocol Quiet Rapture is being initiated.]

[One final Irony. An individual that uses death to its advantage is finally embracing the darkness that comes along with it.]

[21 Destructions. 21 Civilizations.]

[You shall also taste it, the Irony of trying to save humanity.]

[For humanity is not worth saving.]

"...Hm." A simple nod of her head.
