Chapter 28 - A Father's Wisdom & A Nanny's Guilt

I stared out the window of Kaelen's luxurious penthouse, my fingers absently tracing patterns on my still-flat stomach. The morning sun bathed the Seattle skyline in golden light, but my thoughts were far from the beautiful view.

Kaelen had confronted Mark. He'd somehow managed to do what months of my pleading with police and financial institutions couldn't accomplish. Mark had confessed everything.

The thought made my chest tighten with a confusing mix of emotions. Gratitude, certainly. Relief that my financial nightmare might finally end. But also... unease. Why would Kaelen go to such lengths for me? For us? Was it just about protecting his heir, or something more?

"You're overthinking again," I muttered to myself, pushing away from the window.

Being around Kaelen was becoming dangerously comfortable. The way he'd held my hand at the hospital, the fierce protectiveness in his eyes when Dr. Winters mentioned my blood pressure—it felt genuine. And that terrified me.
