I paced the bunker's common area like a caged animal, checking the clock every few minutes. Twenty-six hours. Kaelen had been gone for over a day, and we'd received minimal updates—just enough to know that the mission had gone catastrophically wrong. My heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vise.
"Sera, wearing a path in the floor isn't going to bring them back any faster," Lyra said gently, watching me from the couch where she sat with a mug of tea.
"I can't just sit still," I replied, running my hands through my tangled hair. "Something terrible happened down there, Lyra. I can feel it."
"Harrison said they're alive. Both Kaelen and Ronan are alive." She reached for my hand as I passed by again. "Focus on that."
I let her pull me down beside her, but my leg bounced anxiously. "What about the others? The rest of the team?"
Lyra's expression darkened. "Harrison didn't say."
