I forced a smile, feigning interest in her gossip while my eyes scanned the marketplace for anything worthy of my attention. Shopping with Gabriella always meant enduring her endless prattling, but maintaining connections was essential to my plans.
"Speaking of money," Gabriella continued, lowering her voice conspiratorially, "your family seems to have come into quite a bit lately. New dresses, frequent appearances at society events... I've heard whispers."
