Chapter 34: Viserys

Chapter Text

Everyone on Dragonstone knew about Ikit, the volatile second born of Princess Rhaenyra and twin to Jacaerys. Ikit who had pale hair like Viserys himself, who had bright burning green eyes like no one else, who tamed the dragon Silverwing and held a spectacular intelligence at such a youthful age that it put the entire Citadel to shame. Ikit who left them, abandoned Westeros and headed east across the narrow sea and had yet to return if ever.

Jace would tell Viserys and Aegon about his twin, while Joffrey and Lucerys liked recalling the stories Ikit would tell them- wild fantastical tales of magical creatures and grand battles, that made Viserys wonder if Ikit had intended to be a story writer in his life. Joffrey admitted Ikit told the stories a lot better even if Viserys always liked hearing about them. But much like Aegon, Viserys never met Ikit. His quarrel with Mother had happened just before Aegon's birth and since then the Rat Prince had never once return to Westeros much to Rhaenyra's continual grief.

But Viserys listened. He heard of the rumours that occasionally muttered through Dragonstone, carrying tales about Ikit. Some of the stories were horrendous like the rumours he had slaughtered the disgraced Princess Saera, daughter of Jaehaerys and Alysanne, and fed her numerous bastard to Silverwing for profane blood rituals in Volantis. Others spoke that he had traveled within the Smoking Sea to Old Valyria to seek out the cruel secrets of the peninsula and lived to tell the tale. Others were about great swatches of the Grass Sea going ablaze, the Dothraki being reminded to fear the sky. Viserys didn't really know what to think so he listened to the rumours but only believed what his brothers and parents actually told him.

Rhaenyra always grew damp-eyed when speaking of Ikit so Viserys soon stopped. He didn't want to see his mother hurt and Ikit's refusal to return home pained her deeply. Daemon seemed more pragmatic and accepting, as he had spent quite some time in Essos in his youth. He was of the opinion Ikit would return when he was ready and thus there was nothing for them to do until then. That did not turn away the Realm's Delight from continuing to reach out and thus each moon she would send letters or would speak to sailors, with Corlys helping to try and draw back his wayward heir, but Silverwing's metallic body was not seen over Dragonstone as years passed.

Sometimes they would get a package, however. On small random vessels, never following a particular time or moon or trader. Delivered to the castle but after changing so many hands the sailors never identified Ikit as the originator. The boxes would have strange things, Valyrian things. A sigil-scored horn, a Valyrian steel dagger, an ancient scroll, a windchime of dragonbone. Once a book bound with human flesh filled with paintings of dragons. Once a doll made from white hair. Once a flask of liquor that held a strange glow. Another was a onyx sculpture of a dragon eating a baby. Another was am ivory rat that stood on its hind legs like a man.

Jacaerys was adamant they were from his twin. Viserys meanwhile didn't know why the rat statue scared him so badly and after a week of nightmares where he was eaten alive by rats, he took it from his rooms and placed it in the chamber of the Painted Table.

It was a type of routine when it came to Ikit's gifts. Something Viserys thought about and a brother he longed to meet. He just had to remind himself what Father said, that Ikit would return to them when he was ready. And maybe one day when his egg hatched and his dragon grew big enough, he could fly across Essos and find Ikit himself. After all Viserys was a sixth son. He could travel as he saw fit when he grew old enough, without a House or lordship to care for.

Then his grandfather, his namesake, died, the Greens stole the throne, Visenya died and Mother was crowned.

Even at seven years of age he understood the gravity of it. Of what it all meant, could mean for them. Daemon had sat them down and explained the situation in blunt cold words about what would happen to them, something Rhaenyra was trying to shield them from. But the Rogue Prince had no tolerance for that and would not take the risk so he was upfront about the state of the realm with all of them.

Dragonstone grew tense and worried, there was little laughter to be had and he was never without a guard. Even playing in his chambers with Aegon there would be at least two armoured men watching over them and Viserys always kept his egg close like a security blanket. Still, he heard hope the throne could be reclaimed without violent means. That they would muster up enough lords and pressure Dowager Queen Alicent and her children into returning the stolen throne without shedding blood.

Then Lucerys was killed.

Viserys cried for days even while Aegon was insistent the claims were wrong. As if he expected to Lucerys and Arrax would reappear, that they were just cruel rumours. Joffrey chose bravado, But seeing Jace cry when he returned from the North, when he tried to comfort them as their eldest brother, just forced in the cold misery of truth that one of their brothers was dead. Murdered by Prince Aemond, a kinslayer who slaughtered an envoy and how the usurper king celebrated it.

He was afraid, so afraid, and when Rhaenyra was attacked in her own chambers Viserys realized how close death was now to all of them. He may be a child but the cold terror that seized his stomach did not abate and he knew the threat they were under. How true Daemon's warnings to them were.

And they were sent away.

He, Aegon and Joffrey all complained while Rhaena sat there stone-faced as Rhaenyra explained. She and Joffrey were going to be sent to the Vale, as Lady Jayne had requested a dragon and Joffrey had Tyraxes and Rhaena had Morning. Tyraxes was large enough to be ridden and Morning had grown a lot faster than Stormcloud despite being the same age so they would suffice.

Aegon and himself were to be sent to Pentos, to live under the protection of the prince who was an old friend of Daemon's. Viserys didn't want to leave his family but Rhaenyra was firm; the Greens would kill all of them, like they did Lucerys, to protect their theft. If Dragonstone was assaulted with so many of them inside then it would be a catastrophic loss. She had to protect them by splitting them up and scattering them across the lands so even if one keep fell it would not be the end of it.

Viserys tried to be brave yet failed, red eyed and sniffling as Rhaenyra hugged them goodbye before he and his brother boarded the Gay Abandon. The cog was accompanied by a handful of the Sea Snake's warships, but when they encountered the ninety-strong fleet of enemy ships skulking up coast they were all sunk and the cog boarded.

It was there Viserys was truly left alone- Aegon managed to free Stormcloud from the hold and the turquoise dragon fled after being shot with Aegon clinging to his back. Viserys didn't scream, even if Aegon kept crying his name as Stormcloud bore him up into the sky as more arrows punctured the little dragon's scales as it cried out in pain until it was lost from sight Instead a deathly calm sank over him. His attempt to hide amongst the crew failed when one betrayed him to the slavers boarding the vessel and he'd never hated anyone more than that man. He felt a horrible satisfaction that the snitch was killed shortly after along with the rest of the crew.

Viserys, along with his egg, was taken to Sharako Lohar who was the admiral of the invading fleet who in turn sold him to the Rogares of Lys, with the Gay Abandon now piloted by Lyseni who took their prisoner to Lys.

He was locked up in the magister's manse and he cried himself to sleep most nights, with any thought of rescue shrivelling up as days passed and nothing changed.

No doubt his family all thought him dead, Aegon's last sight of Viserys being when the slavers boarded. Or did Aegon die at sea, falling off the grievously wounded Stormcloud? Was Aegon already dead as well? Was he going to be the only one left once it was all done? Would he only hear about more of his family being killed, one by one, until they were all dead?

His warden Lysandro Rogare was a wealthy banker, creator of the Rogare bank which rivaled Braavos's famous Iron Bank. Viserys was told if he remained quiet and calm then no harm would come to him and once the war in Westeros was concluded he would be sold to whomever held the Iron Throne. Viserys knew if it was Aegon the Usurper then he would be killed, and he prayed each night to any god that was listening that his mother Rhaenyra prevailed. She would pay anything to bring him back, Viserys knew.

Each night he prayed and during the day he was kept in the Rogare manse as it crossed over into a month of his capture. There he grew used to the banker and his children, who, beyond the dead-eyed guards and slaves who never looked at him, was his only company.

The man had six sons and three daughters, even if Larra, the youngest daughter, was the one who spent the most time with Viserys. She would sometimes even bring him his dragon egg and ask him to tell him stories about Old Valyria, about the Targaryens. Like most Lyseni she resembled Viserys- silver-gold hair and purple eyes. Here, the colouring was normal and expected and Viserys found himself liking Larra even if she didn't speak Common but both were fluent enough in High Valyrian they could converse.

In his jail Larra quickly became a close friend, bringing him stories and gifts, keeping him company during the day and singing him songs in an attempt to put him at ease. She would bring him secret treats and show him strange books. She was fourteen to his seven, but Viserys happily accepted her company. It helped fight off his tide of morbid thoughts, his crippling anxiety and fears for his family. His grief over Lucerys. She claimed that his brother Aegon had managed to make it back to Dragonstone and Viserys believed her, just as she claimed that one day his egg would hatch for him.

It was why he didn't mind when he heard Lysandro speaking of marrying him and Larra in the future during one of their dinners together- she was kind and sweet, and Viserys clung to her with all the desperation of an abandoned child captive who feared the death of his family would do. If he married her, then maybe he could also use the Rogare Bank to help Mother.

He desperately wished he could do something but he was a child and dragonless. All he could do was pray to whatever god was listening.

And then in the middle of the night a month and a half into his capture, he was awaken by tolling bells and distant screams.

Viserys jolted upright in bed, clutching the blankets against his chest. Outside the windows he saw a ruddy gleam, distant flames as they quickly began to spread across the city.

Then a roar cut through the air- unmistakable for anyone raised upon Dragonstone, a bestial raging noise that was followed by more terrified screams. For a brief wild moment Viserys thought his parents had come for him, before logic brushed that aside. The bellows of the dragon setting Lys aflame out beyond weren't the shrill whistles of Ceraxes, nor the trumpet-like roar of Syrax. Seasmoke, maybe? Viserys had never really been near the pale dragon but the roars almost reminded him of screaming, a sharp screeching noise that made the hair on his nape go on end.

The door burst open, Lysandro at the front with his crowd of children and a handful of guards, making Viserys flinch.

"Grab him!" Lysandro ordered and Viserys was hauled out of bed roughly.

Still in his sleeping shift, Viserys was dragged along with the group with Larra seizing his hand as she slotted to his side. Lysandro's hand was tight on Viserys's shoulder.

"You'll tell them we've treated you gently? When they come for you? We didn't hurt you, we treated you well," Larra asked, purple eyes big and shining as her fingers clenched around his. Outside the dragon howled again.

Viserys squeezed her hand back, nodding but unable to speak as they passed down a hall with great windows showing the burning city beyond. Another roar from afar then a huge jet of flame in the distance, a great torrent of green, and another swathe of buildings collapsed in distant screams and fire.

Even from so far Viserys could feel the heat as more of the city burst into flames. He was herded into the lower level of the manse, with the gleaming marble floors, stain glass windows and elaborate tapestries. In one wall were several heavy vault doors, dark and looming. The entire estate was oddly empty and Viserys felt most of the servants and guards had chosen to flee when the dragon appeared, not wanting to be blamed for the Rogare's theft of him.

Lysandro barely had time to start demanding one of the vaults be opened, to use as impromptu shelter, when the great oaken entry doors to the manse exploded inward in a burst of green lightning.

A blur of movement as someone crossed the threshold and with a flash of steel the guards were near cleaved in half. Lysandro stumbled back as blood sprayed across them, loosing his grip on Viserys who clung to Larra as she screamed. A gauntlet-clad fist smashed into Lysandro's face, breaking his jaw and sending an eyeball flying as the man fell like a tree being struck down. The intruder, in dull blue armour with steel accents, turned and with a flash of their immense halberd, took off the heads of two of Lysandro's sons in a single swing.

Viserys fell over, slipping on the blood, as Larra went rolling across the ground. Blood sprayed everywhere and a severed head bounced across the marble even as the last son fell over, the entire upper half of his skull missing as his brain splattered over the ground.

A scream which cut off with a wet gurgle and Viserys, as he crawled across the red soaked ground, saw one of Larra's sisters try to run only for the blade of the halberd to piece her back and burst through her chest in a flare of gore. The last sister had her long blonde hair seized and she was smashed face first into the wall so hard it left a bloody crater. In several short, violent motions everyone except himself, Larra and the stranger were dead.

Larra was cringing against the wall, begging for mercy as tears spilled down her cheeks. It was not given as the armoured man simply marched over to her and then struck her so powerfully in the face with the halberd her head seemed to explode. Blood and bone splattered across the marble floor as silence fell over the room.

In the distance through the still open doors Viserys heard the sound of great leathery wings. Fire and faint screams, the tolling of bells.

The armoured man straightened up, bloody droplets clinging to their artfully crafted, rat-shaped helm that fully encased their features. The long muzzle was wrinkled in a forever snarl, showing sharp teeth, while the eyes were inlaid with gleaming green stones that held a subtle glow. The armour itself held a strange wondrous arcane sheen to it.

On the floor Lysandro wheezed and coughed, his face a gory mess. The armoured man turned, twirling the immense halberd easily in hand as he approached the injured Lyseni.

A part of Viserys felt he should be running away screaming but he found himself unable to think of anything except his dragon egg. Where was it? He must protect it, what if it had hatched and the dragon was all alone? What if it got broken. By then the man had finished hacking Lysandro to death, the man now resembling a spread of steaming meat on the floor, and turned to face Viserys.

Viserys's breathing was tight and shaky as he remained huddled on the floor, his sleeping shift splattered in red. For a moment neither did anything except stare at each other, then the man jammed the handle of his halberd into the ground, the weapon cracking the marble as if it were mere wood which made Viserys flinch.

Then he reached up and pulled apart the snarling muzzle of his helmet, revealing a face that bore a familiar Valyrian beauty. A deeply uncanny resemblance to Rhaenyra herself, as if someone had taken the Realm's Delight and altered her features to be slightly more masculine. Thick shaggy silver hair hung past his ears.

And then there was those bright green eyes.

Those eyes snagged his attention above all else. Vibrant and glowing with arcane energy.

"Lekia," Viserys managed to say before he burst into tears.

Because Viserys knew beyond a doubt this was his wayward older brother, twin to Jacaerys, and who Viserys had never met. Who had come to rescue him.

"You are Viserys, the littlest one of den mother," Ikit spoke. Just like Joffrey said, Ikit's voice was raspy and hoarse, almost as if he had a cold.

He knelt down next to Viserys, who remained crying on the ground. Viserys flung himself forward, clinging to Ikit in a hug. His brother tolerated it for a long while even with Viserys remembering how his brothers all said the same, that Ikit disliked physical touch.

When Viserys's sobbing somewhat calmed down, no longer near choking him, Ikit carefully pried him loose and then gauntlet clad hands took his face, checked his messy pale hair, tilted his head back and forth. Viserys just kept crying quietly from relief, knowing that if Ikit was here then he wasn't alone. Even with that horrible news from Westeros, he was no longer alone.

When Ikit finished checking him over, seemingly content he wasn't injured or maimed, Viserys had managed to compose himself somewhat even if his breathing remained short and tears trickled from his eyes.

"Lekia," Viserys's voice stuttered but he made himself forge forward with, "King Viserys is dead. Aegon, Alicent's son, was crowned as king and usurped Mother. Lucerys...Luke is dead. He was murdered by Prince Aemond."

Ikit's face twisted into something violent, "Yes-yes, he is. Birthkin dead. But heard whelp of usurper king beheaded as punishment. Good."

"...I think it was a bad thing, killing an innocent," Viserys said.

"Bah! You think Birthkin Lucerys wasn't innocent?" Ikit demanded. "Kill-kill all your enemies, if we did so sooner all would be dead and Lucerys alive. But they live, and he instead is dead-dead. So we must kill-kill the rest. Otherwise they will do that to us."

Viserys nodded, figuring that made sense. Jaehaerys was innocent but Lucerys and Visenya had been too. Maybe Jaehaerys being killed was just balancing the scales, for the innocents the Greens had taken.

"But how did you find me?" Viserys asked, getting briefly distracted by the blood all around them.

"Triarchy failed invasion," Ikit said as he sat back on his heels. "I burned-destroyed half their fleet, den mother and others saw to other half. All ships killed. I found escaping soldiers, learned about usurpation. Learned they stole-took you. So I came."

"You didn't know of the usurpation?" Viserys asked, confused. He thought everyone knew by now. But then again the Sea Snake said Ikit was in a very strange, isolated city. No wonder he didn't get any news.

"No. Was returning on my own, saw Triarchy ships. Attacked them, learned truth from survivors. Now I have you, and we go-fly to den mother."

Ikit got him to his feet and Viserys quickly latched onto his arm. He was still crying quietly but it was now out of relief, knowing his other big brother was here to protect him. Even if he spoke all funny and used odd words for things, just like Lucerys had always told him. If anything that just made Viserys like Ikit a lot even after just meeting him.

"Why I took so long to find you was because stupid thing told me you were taken to Tyrosh first," Ikit said in a conversational tone as he yanked his halberd from the ground. "I killed-tortured-burnt-ate enough to learn that was lie. So then went to Myr. Killed more, tortured more. Also not there. Then went to Dorne and burned down Sunspear. Kill-killed many more. Not there and stupid things knew nothing at all. So last checked here, and you are here."

"You burned down Dorne?" Viserys asked. He wasn't sure if that was good or bad. Even Aegon the Conqueror and Queen Visenya never burned down Sunspear.

"They are enemies," Ikit shrugged. "Kill them all. Also fun, good food. Spicy. No Tomb Kings. And princess said you most like be here after I fed enough of her limbs to servant-slave. So here I am and so are you."

"How did you know I wasn't one of them? We have the same colouring," Viserys said, looking over to the bloodied remains of the Rogares. It was like a block was in his mind, refusing to accept those splattered, gory remains were people. Especially Larra, her body still slumped against the wall as if she'd just sat down minus a head.

Ikit just looked at him as if he'd asked the stupidest thing ever, "You are not those lesser things. Why would you be?"

Viserys supposed that made sense. To Ikit at least.

But still, there was something important they needed to find before anything else happened.

"My dragon egg is somewhere in here," Viserys said after a minute where Ikit just stared at him, even if Larra's headless body kept on trying to distract him. "And I have spare clothes in the room they kept me in."

"Fine. We go to prisoner room first. Lead way."

Viserys kept a tight hand on Ikit's hand as he led his brother through the vast empty hallways of the estate. Still, he found himself looking at Ikit's halberd as they walked. The blade was vicious and curved, with a jagged toothed edge as it smoothed down into the handle. A weapon designed to both cut and tear. The handle was of a strange gleaming stone, and affixed to the spine of the blade was a bright green stone which matched the ones at Ikit's throat and threaded through his hair.

"Morskittar," Ikit said proudly, following the source of his stare.

"They said you can make Valyrian steel and armour."

"Yes. It is not hard, I have no idea why everyone said it was. Maybe they're just all stupid and I'm the smartest of them all."

"I think you're very smart," Viserys said. They passed one of the windows and out in the darkness the dragon was still flying over Lys, vomiting fire as people screamed and died far beyond. "Jace, Luke and Joffrey told me and Aegon all about you. They would tell us all the stories you told them. About the Elves and Dwarfs, the Skaven and Greenskins, about the wars and fighting and magical people. The griffons and unicorns and dragons. I like all those stories."

"Hm yes, stories."

Viserys led them to his room and there he splashed himself with the basin of cold water to get the blood stains off his face, then changed into breeches and a tunic, a pair of gloves and boots. After a moment he also picked a hat, tying the string under his chin. It would always get chilly on dragon back just from the wind.

He was going to go home. He was going to go home. He was going to see his mother and father, his sisters and brothers. His big brother Ikit was here to protect him, was going to Westeros.

Viserys had no idea where his egg was but it turned out Ikit could hunt down the dragon egg like a bloodhound, with Viserys clinging to his hand as his older brother sniffed at the air and seemingly tracked it down by scent alone.

"Magic, far more concentrated. Easy to track if you know how," Ikit explained after they entered the office space and found the egg in a small locked chest. Ikit simply smashed open the lock with his halberd and Viserys was then clutching his scaly egg to his chest.

"Can you teach me magic?" Viserys asked when they were walking back to the entrance hall. "Luke said you made it, that green stone. Warpstone."

Ikit's smile was all teeth, sharp and long as if a dragon was grinning at him, "If you have a skill and the Horned Rat blesses you, then yes. I could. Be the most powerful clan."

Viserys felt an excited lurch in his chest at that. If he had magic then even if his egg never hatched it wouldn't matter. He could fight even without a sword. He could be strong and destroy their enemies, like how strong Ikit was. In the barely lit hallways his eyes glowed bright green. Viserys loved his brother so much and he clutched Ikit's hand tighter even as they walked past the ruined remains of the Rogares.

Outside the estate Lys the Lovely was on fire, a great swathe of flame that stretched all the way to the sea as the island burned in raging infernos. A sharp whistle from Ikit and the dragon, which had been hovering in the air and vomiting down great green flames upon the harbour, quickly flapped its wings and rapidly approached. As it flew the fires below flashed and shimmered off its metallic wings, gleaming with a myriad of greens and reds in the flaming night.

Silverwing.

Viserys had heard about the Good Queen Alysanne's dragon, had seen portraits of both the late queen and her dragon within Dragonstone. All agreed she was various shades of silver- her body a solid dull grey, while her wings were a brilliant silver like polished armour which were the cause of her name. That while in flight her wings would reflect great shimmers of light, as if she was forged of metal instead of scale.

But as the dragon landed Viserys realized she didn't match the pictures he'd seen- her horns, she had six dominate horns curling backwards but they looked as if splitting apart with shards of gleaming green ore poking from them like spikes within a geode. More green spikes were dotted along her shoulders, down her neck and her tail was great spiky thicket of green that glowed eerily in the darkness of night. She also lacked the blue eyes of her portraits, instead she had six eyes and all of them the same bright green as Ikit's own.

There was a great bell tower on her back, gleaming with runes and the clapper within the bell the same green even if it was currently held in place. The saddle was densely carved and extremely elaborate, with so many saddlebags, satchels and sheathes upon it, and a folded down weapon almost like a prongless scorpion at the fore. There were two massive spheres lashed onto either side of Silverwing's hips, tied to the bell tower. They were formed of great overlapping strips of metal, over and over like a bound nut, and carved with so many runes and glyphs and sigils it hurt Viserys's eyes to stare at them. The spheres were so large they would be even taller than Syrax but Silverwing was so massive she showed no irritation to the amount of steel lashed onto her.

She was bigger than Vermithor, Viserys knew for a fact now.

Ikit barked something in a harsh language Viserys couldn't recognize and Silverwing crawled forward. The Rogares had a great elaborate staircase leading up to their manse to showcase their once status as one of the richest families in Lys, and Silverwing was able to position herself down on the courtyard, trampling trees and delicate garden beds beneath her bulk, as she settled next to the stairs so they could easily mount her from above.

"What are those ball things?" Visery asked, pointing.

His brother laughed, saying simply, "Doomsphere."

"What's a Doomsphere?"

"Greatest work, what I had to finish as I told Grandsire. And I have done it! Used to be size of a steamship, could not be moved once being created. But Valyrian steel, so gloriously compatible with warpstone, with all Skryre technology, even greater than barazhunk. I, Ikit Claw and greatest of all warlock engineers, amplified-strengthened the condensed warpstone with dragon eggs, same horrible-beautiful strength yet so much more compact, easily moved about! So can now make many in safety then move them easily! Great magical bomb capable of vaporizing entire cities and now I can deliver it upon dragonback. No longer need to be built below, but now from above! Now never fear discovery for can simply drop them like hawk with rock. Wonderful wonderful, yes-yes."

Viserys stared at the huge twin spheres, even as Ikit sheathed his halberd on Silverwing's saddle as he pulled his rat-faced helm back down to shield his face.

Then he grabbed Viserys underneath his armpits, easily hefting him up onto the saddle. It was extremely comfortable and plush, designed for people who flew for hours or even days at a time. Viserys was chained onto the saddle, and he didn't protest when Ikit took his egg and put it in one of the satchels in front of him; inside was an assortment of small pointed shards of Valryian steel, no bigger than his fingernail.

"Will the Doomsphere kill Vhagar?" Viserys asked as Ikit sat in the saddle behind him. Viserys leaned back against his brother's chest, blinking up at him.

Ikit's laughter shook him, "Only one way to find out, yes-yes?"

Silverwing turned, her great tail shattering the stairs, before she launched herself up into the night sky and quickly flew upwards, leaving the burning city of Lys the Lovely behind them.
