"Don't cut the call, idiot!" Leilani yells from the other side of the line.
I pause. "Yes?"
"It's not bad news, you don't need to come to the hospital. I'll tell you all about it at home."
"But—"
Leilani lets out a teary chuckle, "It's really fine, Des. She's not dying, in fact, she's getting better actually—ah—you're going to make me spill the news before we meet. I'll see you in thirty minutes, yeah?—" A pause. "—And yes, I miss you. Make sure you're home on time, okay?" Then she cuts the call.
The elevator opens with a loud ding that matches the thud in my chest after Leilani's last line as I step into the lavish car park, doing my best to contain the excitement in my blood.
She said she misses me. Leilani fucking misses my presence.
