Chapter 165 - Chapter 165: It Really Was the KGB

After school, Peter let Venom cover his entire body. He and Cindy no longer needed to find a place to change into their suits—Cindy didn't need to in the first place, as she could weave a temporary suit on the spot.

"I've always wanted to ask, can a suit like that really keep you safe?" Peter asked.

"It's bulletproof," Cindy said, a fact that shocked Peter.

"Really?"

Cindy nodded again, pulling different-colored threads with distinctly different textures from her fingertips.

"It can be bulletproof, insulated, conductive, and radiation-resistant."

Peter knew that Cindy's webs could be insulated and radiation-resistant, as it had been mentioned in the comics. But bulletproof was a bit ridiculous. Even in the comics, when Cindy Moon wrapped herself in radiation-resistant webbing, she had to practically cover herself like a mummy to achieve it.

"Uh, that's cool. Oh, right, could you ask S.H.I.E.L.D. something for me?" Peter asked before Venom covered his face. "Is Sergei Kravinoff with the KGB? I mean, was he a member of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service?"

Cindy immediately took out her phone and started messaging. Peter was about to add that she didn't have to be in such a hurry, but he held his tongue. After Cindy finished sending the message, he handed her the earbuds he had prepared beforehand. "The base that Oscorp helped me build yesterday is finished. These earbuds can provide some… strategic support. I know S.H.I.E.L.D. probably has better stuff, but these are, you know, for spiders to use together."

"Thanks," Cindy said, nodding as she took the earbuds. Peter was about to say something else, but then an unknown number called his phone. He picked up his phone and looked at Cindy, who directly replied with a name: "It's Nick Fury."

Is Director Fury that bored? He just called me directly?

Peter, confused, answered the phone and heard Fury's voice from the other end. "How did you figure out that Sergei Kravinoff was a Russian spy?"

"Uh, I guessed?"

"Guess again, I'm serious."

"His family's manor has been left untouched for decades, even though no one is officially watching it. That can only mean there are people living and working inside. Nikolai Kravinoff founded numerous profitable but small-scale companies that couldn't form a supply chain, then sold them to others. I know many KGB spies with fake identities like to use different aliases to acquire or start companies to avoid suspicion from receiving funds from their country."

"Also, when Sergei's great-grandfather left Tsarist Russia, his child would have been in their teens, maybe not even ten years old. So, he might not have had a strong hatred for the Soviet system and ideology. On the contrary, he probably saw how the Soviets turned Russia into a superpower and defeated the Germans. I know many Russian spies don't necessarily support the ideals of the Soviet Union, but they are Great Russian chauvinists, so they would support the USSR."

Peter was not supposed to know that the Chameleon, Dmitri, was Kraven's brother, so he didn't mention it. But after hearing what Peter had just said, Nick Fury was silent for a long time. He cursed under his breath, then asked again, "How did you get all that information?"

"It's all on Wikipedia. The Kravinoff manor has become a famous spot for a niche group. Our detective club's president gave it to us for our club activity today."

Nick Fury, who was far away in Washington, couldn't help but rub his temples. What a great talent. Why did he have to be an Avenger? How great would it have been if he had joined S.H.I.E.L.D.? He didn't dwell on it for too long, however, and immediately asked, "Why are you asking about this?"

"You don't know?"

"Am I supposed to know everything?"

"Oh, sorry," Peter explained helplessly. "Last night, we were looking for evidence of Fisk's illegal businesses and went to his Museum of Natural Art. But it turned out there was someone touring inside. That person was Sergei Kravinoff. It was already 10 PM, closing time, but they held a special exhibition just for him."

Alright, now everything connects. Nick Fury rubbed his temples and remembered there was indeed such a thing. "Yes, I remember now. A Russian super soldier entered the country. Even if he's a tourist, we have to keep an eye on him. But I really didn't pay much attention to that museum."

"Super soldier?"

"Yes, he and his brother, the Chameleon you met, both underwent Russian operations. His brother became a master of disguise and a super spy, while he was injected with a new generation of the super soldier serum. We've speculated that he might be here to avenge his brother, but since you didn't kill the Chameleon, you don't have to worry about it."

But the Chameleon died right in front of me, killed by the Punisher.

As he said this, Nick Fury realized he hadn't answered Peter's question yet, so he continued, "As for what you asked, Sergei himself has no connection to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. But yes, you guessed correctly. S.H.I.E.L.D. has confirmed that his father and grandfather were both KGB spies."

"And they were never arrested."

"Arresting KGB spies is the CIA's job. What does that have to do with S.H.I.E.L.D.? The World Security Council even has a permanent Russian seat."

Nick Fury's answer was unexpected but reasonable. Whether the CIA knew about the Kravinoff family's secret was anyone's guess. However, Peter was now curious about something else: was Kraven really his enemy? Was he just on vacation, or was he here to find out who killed his brother? Or was he a super soldier who felt he couldn't find a worthy prey and came to New York to vent?

Peter was pondering this when Nick Fury directly interrupted his thoughts. "S.H.I.E.L.D. will be responsible for keeping an eye on Sergei. You don't need to worry about him. We've also reviewed your collaboration with Oscorp, and there are no issues."

How do I not know you guys reviewed it? Whatever, S.H.I.E.L.D. loves to do this stuff. It doesn't matter.

Then Nick Fury asked his next question.

"So what the hell are you planning to do now?"

"I'm about to go out with Cindy to see if there's anyone in New York City who needs help."

Nick Fury was silent for a few seconds.

"Well then, have a great day, Spider-Man."

Without waiting for Peter to say anything, Nick Fury hung up. Peter looked at his phone, slightly surprised. He didn't expect Nick Fury to wish him well.
