Three months had passed since they left Nagoya. They found a village far from the Japanese Imperial Demon Army's jurisdiction. After the battle at Nagoya, they realized they had no place in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. They were being hunted by Kureto Hīragi, the future head of the Hīragi family, and no matter how capable they were, they couldn't stay.
Although Aoki had the power to wipe out the entire Japanese Imperial Demon Army, he was still unconscious, having been so for a month and a half. He'd spent the remaining time recovering, and even now, he hadn't fully recovered; he needed to avoid strenuous activity.
In this village, the villagers had given them a wooden house on the outskirts. They protected the villagers from the occasional Four Horsemen, and the villagers provided them with shelter. This wasn't because the villagers trusted them, but because they were the only guarantee of safety.
If the villagers truly trusted them, they wouldn't have given them only a small wooden house on the village outskirts.
As for Yūichirō Hyakuya, who had fainted like Aoki, his condition was much better. He'd awakened within a month of leaving Nagoya, but as a side effect, he periodically turned into a demon. The transformations were brief, but to prevent him from harming the villagers, Mikaela Hyakuya and the others would bind him in advance and leave him under Mikaela Hyakuya's care.
Although the villagers gave them shelter, they didn't provide free food. In this world, food was precious. They only gave them two weeks' worth of food; their remaining food came from a plot of farmland provided by the villagers.
The owner of the farmland had been killed by the Four Horsemen, leaving it vacant. The villagers planned to divide the soon-to-be-ripe crops, but Shinoa Hīragi and the others changed their minds.
Initially, they hadn't intended to give the farmland to Shinoa Hīragi and her group, but to prevent them from forcibly seizing food, they reluctantly relinquished it.
Three months later, in the farmland, Shiho Kimizuki, the only one who knew how to farm, was toiling away, occasionally wiping sweat from his brow. The farming tools were also provided by the villagers, but they were all from the original owner's house.
Besides Shiho Kimizuki, Mitsuba Sangū and the others were also working, except for Mikaela Hyakuya, Yūichirō Hyakuya, and Aoki, who needed to avoid strenuous activity.
"I'll check on Yūichirō Hyakuya," Mikaela Hyakuya said suddenly, walking towards a small building next to the wooden house.
They had built the small building themselves over the past three months to store things.
Inside, Mikaela Hyakuya saw Yūichirō Hyakuya chained to the wall, head down, with small demonic horns sprouting from his head, looking oddly cute.
"Release me! Release me from these chains now! I'll kill you! I'll kill you all!" Yūichirō Hyakuya roared, spotting Mikaela Hyakuya. He thrashed, trying to break free, but his struggles were futile.
Outside, Shinoa Hīragi and the others heard Yūichirō Hyakuya's shouts, but they were used to it, as it happened almost every day for the past three months.
Inside the building, Yūichirō Hyakuya, finding his struggles useless, suddenly became docile, saying to Mikaela Hyakuya, "Hey, Mikaela, Mikaela, help me break these chains. Let's escape together, just our family. We're family, aren't we? So hurry and unlock these chains."
Mikaela Hyakuya looked at Yūichirō Hyakuya sadly, then a scornful smile appeared on his face. "Huh? Family? Shut up, you ugly demon. Those words sound disgusting coming from you."
But Yūichirō Hyakuya didn't give up. "Mikaela, let's escape—escape from vampires and humans, just the two of us. That's your wish, isn't it? I'm really suffering. Help me remove the charms and chains. Please, Mikaela."
Mikaela Hyakuya remained silent, staring at the ticking clock in his hand.
Yūichirō Hyakuya grew agitated. "I said, unlock me! Aren't we family?! Can you bear to see me suffer like this?! Unlock me! Hurry! I'll devour your heart!"
The clock in Mikaela Hyakuya's hand ticked 120 times.
The small demonic horns on Yūichirō Hyakuya's head instantly disappeared, and his entire demeanor changed. His gaze towards Mikaela Hyakuya was completely different.
"Huh? Did I turn into a demon again?" Yūichirō Hyakuya looked confused, then turned to Mikaela Hyakuya. "Good morning, Mikaela."
Mikaela Hyakuya was exasperated by Yūichirō Hyakuya's optimism. "What 'good morning'? Honestly, Yūichirō Hyakuya, the time you're possessed is two minutes longer than yesterday. Two minutes may not seem like much to you, but to me, it's a huge number because if you're possessed for two minutes longer every day, in just six months, you'll be possessed for more than half the day."
"It's a headache, a real headache. Besides, you keep saying you want to turn me back into a human, but what if you're no longer human yourself? It's all because you wanted to protect those pointless humans that things got so out of hand."
Yūichirō Hyakuya, bewildered by Mikaela Hyakuya's rambling scolding, didn't get angry, simply smiling. "But those 'pointless humans' you talk about are now your comrades, too."
Mikaela Hyakuya froze, at a loss for words. He didn't intend to be comrades with any human besides Yūichirō Hyakuya, but despite his words, he'd already acknowledged that Shinoa Hīragi and the others were his comrades; he was just too stubborn to admit it.
At that moment, Shinoa Hīragi appeared at the doorway. "It's been three hours since you turned into a demon. Yūichirō Hyakuya, are you back to normal?"
"Ah, yes. I feel refreshed. Good morning, Shinoa," Yūichirō Hyakuya smiled.
