Chapter Eighteen: The Final Struggle
As Maxim Greenowel heard the answer from that man, he looked at him in shock, realizing what the man standing next to him had said. He looked the man in the eye, still in shock, and asked, "What do you mean? Before the Alderwoods, my Greenowel family was just a simple commoner family?"
The man then looked at Maxim and said, "I don't know what you mean by a commoner family descendant, but as you are in the time hundreds of years after my death, I think it must be a status. But it does not matter. What matters is that right now, you won't be able to take this guy's hit if you don't awaken the power of Greenowel—the power to control the realm between the living and dead… the shadow realm, the realm of gentle peace of darkness."
As soon as Maxim heard his words, he was confused. He thought in his mind, "What is this old man saying? Could he be a demon trying to take over my body?"
Maxim dared not make the wrong decision, but then a memory appeared in his mind—the memory of his mother, Nelkara Greenowel.
As he drowned in the memory of his mother…
He saw his dying mother on her bed, speaking to him.
The memory looked at Maxim and said, "Son, promise me you will make the Greenowel shine brighter than we ever did—help us climb to nobility."
Then Maxim saw another figure emerge in the realm—his younger self.
The young Maxim held his dying mother's hands with his tiny hands and spoke with his trembling voice, "Mother… don't die… please don't."
The present Maxim looked at both of them, crying, because he knew what followed after this moment.
Nelkara spoke once again to young Maxim, "I'm sorry sweetheart… but I can't decline the Almighty's call… I just can't… please promise tha…t y..ou will make… us shine—" (Thuds)
The image of his mother started to fade away, but the young Maxim did not.
He still held his mother's fading hand and spoke in a low voice, "Don't worry, Mother. I will slay the gods if I have to… to fulfill your promise."
The present Maxim then looked at them, tears rolling down his eyes. He felt more miserable than ever, now that he remembered his promise.
Then suddenly, a wave of thoughts flooded his mind.
"Could he really complete the promise?"
"Is he good enough?"
"Will he really beat that monster?"
But one single thought shut all of the other thoughts down:
"If he did not take the chance, he would lose the last thing that was held between him and his mother—the promise."
He then turned his head and saw the man standing. He then spoke in a heavy voice, "I don't care if you're a demon or an angel or my ancestor—I will do everything it takes to fulfill my promise. Lend me power."
The man was satisfied with Maxim. A grin appeared on his face. "Now that is the blood of Greenowel, boy. Then take this orb, boy."
A green orb appeared in the man's hands, symbolizing peace and rebirth.
Maxim then willingly took the orb, and the orb disappeared into his body.
The whole arena then started to shake, and a bright green beam shot towards the skies, with Lynix now being sent backward after the surge of energy.
He looked at Maxim, who was glowing in bright green light, with his hair now being bright emerald green and his body completely fine.
Maxim looked at Lynix and said, "Now we shall rumble once again."
