After capturing Zekrom, Ace took Garchomp and Genesect and returned to the desert through the tunnel.
Ace recalled Garchomp, hopped onto Genesect, which had transformed into a disk form, and checked the map on his electronic watch. After a few taps, he told Genesect, "Go."
Genesect immediately took off, flying Ace toward his next destination.
At the same time, in the Indigo Plateau of the Kanto region.
Ash was invited to the Pokémon League, accompanied by Gary and Green.
"Your training is over?"
Green looked at Ash beside her and teased, "I heard you and Gold were hiding in Mt. Silver for ages and hadn't come out."
Ash scratched his head awkwardly. "Hahaha, it was alright."
Gary looked at both Ash and Green, saying resignedly, "A chatty woman, a foolish man."
The three chatted as they entered a large conference room nearby.
"You've arrived."
The League Chairman sat at the head of the table, carefully combing the sparse tuft of hair on his head. He gestured to the empty seats beside him. "Take a seat first. A few others haven't arrived yet."
"We won't sit just yet," Green said, frowning. She pointed to the people already seated and stated, "Tell us what this is all about first. Based on your answer, I'll decide whether to stay."
The people Green pointed to were four individuals sitting leisurely: Bruno, Koga, Karen, and Will—from left to right.
All of them were individuals with whom Green and her companions had had past conflicts.
Not just Green, but Ash and Gary also frowned, immediately raising their guard against the four seated figures.
"Sit down first. I will make a joint announcement once everyone is present."
The Chairman adopted a formal air. Compared to his easygoing manner with Ace, the Chairman maintained considerable authority when dealing with Ash and his friends.
"Hmph."
Green scoffed but eventually sat down.
The reason she didn't immediately turn and leave was simple: she genuinely needed the League's power for something.
Ash and Gary also found seats. They didn't have to wait long, as two more people soon walked in.
"Blaine, Erika?"
Ash was momentarily stunned as he looked at the two entering.
"Everyone is here, then."
The Chairman put down his comb, cleared his throat, and said, "So, I've called you here because there are a few matters I need to inform you about."
Blaine and Erika also took their seats, looking at the Chairman and waiting for him to continue.
"In light of the two disturbances in the Kanto and Johto regions, the League feels that the level of management over the various cities is insufficient. The power of a Gym Leader is, ultimately, too weak for an entire city."
The Chairman spoke. His Jynx handed out several documents, placing one in front of each person.
"Therefore, the positions for the Elite Four and the selection of the Champion must be finalized quickly."
The Chairman raised his voice, "You are all experts whom I have personally selected. I hope you will accept this honor and responsibility."
Green quickly skimmed the document, grasping the gist of the Elite Four position.
The Elite Four position was higher than that of a Gym Leader and lower than the Champion. The responsibility was to be dispatched by the League to assist various Gym Leaders in managing their respective towns.
The benefits and compensation for the Elite Four position were, naturally, generous.
First, all their Poké Balls could be replaced with Ultra Balls, and they could purchase rare Poké Balls and items through internal League channels.
Second, the salary was eighty thousand League credits per month, making it an extremely high-paying position.
Finally, they could request the transfer of rare Pokémon. The Elite Four could request the League to allocate them exceptionally rare and powerful Pokémon.
Tap-tap.
Green finished reading the document and knocked on the conference table in front of her, drawing everyone's attention.
"I've read the document. What I want to know is, if I become one of the Elite Four, will I be able to mobilize the League's intelligence system to help me find two people?"
Green asked, her expression unchanged, but her heart was faintly expectant.
Indeed, the reason Green didn't immediately walk out was to leverage the League's intelligence network to search for her birth parents.
The Chairman looked at Green, pondered for a moment, and then nodded. "Yes."
"Then I'm in."
Green agreed without hesitation. She didn't necessarily care about the other perks, but the ability to use the League's intelligence network to track her parents was the point Green valued most.
Since escaping from the Masked Man, Green's three major driving goals in life were: taking care of Silver, getting revenge on Pryce, and finding her birth parents.
The first two were essentially complete.
Now, only the last goal remained.
Once she truly found her parents and reunited with her family, all of Green's obsessions would dissipate, and she could finally achieve true peace of mind.
"I'll join as well."
Following closely, Erika smiled and raised her hand to join. Erika was already a Gym Leader, so accepting the Elite Four position was a clear promotion.
Whether for her future career or for her family, Erika had no reason to refuse becoming an Elite Four member.
With the addition of these two, the four—Bruno, Koga, Karen, and Will—also chose to join.
At this point, there were a total of six people for the Elite Four positions.
It was then that Blaine adjusted his glasses and spoke, "I'd like to join, but I'm getting old. Chairman, you should select some fresh blood. I'll stick to being a Gym Leader."
The Chairman was silent for a moment, then nodded, respecting Blaine's decision.
Only Ash and Gary remained. Gary pushed the document away and said to the Chairman, "I'm currently only temporarily filling in as the Gym Leader for Viridian City for Ash. Now that Ash is back, I'd like to resign. As for the Elite Four, I have even less interest."
"You have no interest in the Elite Four, but what about the Champion?"
Ash suddenly spoke, waving the document in his hand. "Chairman, why is my document for the Champion position and not the Elite Four?"
Gary was stunned. He snatched the document from Ash's hand and looked through it, then a smile spread across his face.
Handing the document back to the Chairman, Gary said, "If that's truly the case, then I'm willing to accept the Champion position."
The Chairman looked at Ash and Gary, his eyes narrowed, and then he nodded. "Very well. Then Ash and Gary, you two will assume the Champion positions for the Kanto and Johto regions. Bruno, Koga, Karen, and Will will be the Elite Four for the Johto region. Green and Erika, you two will be the Elite Four for the Kanto region. I will find a way to fill the remaining vacant slots."
Green glanced at Ash and Gary, thinking suspiciously, Did they just decide all that so casually?
