The night had settled deep over the city as Grey finally left the office for home, in his SUV. The hour was late enough that most decent people were already in bed.
His headlights suddenly illuminated a figure that had appeared so suddenly and so close that Grey's heart sank. He panicked, then yanked the wheel hard to the side, as he felt certain he was about to hit an innocent person.
The SUV skidded to a halt, and Grey sat there for a moment, adrenaline coursing through his veins as his heart hammered against his ribs. "Shit," he muttered, trying to steady his breathing.
He stepped out of the vehicle, looking frantically toward where the figure had been standing. "Who the hell was that?" he called out, but the road ahead was completely empty, as if no one had ever been there at all.
