Chapter 17 - Let's Have A Talk—Kasahara Kentaro II

Light fell upon me. Above, I could vaguely see silhouettes watching me. The Men with Hats. A group of people whose identities were unknown to anyone. People who held information and were prepared to take it to the other side at any moment. They were also the ones who had been limiting my movements for some time, but things were about to change very soon.

— Crimson Emma! We have summoned you to this meeting to inform you regarding the course of your actions—and the fact that we are displeased with them.

— I'm sorry, Your Graces, but urgent action must be taken regarding Kasahara Kentaro. I am in complete agreement.

— Silence! The reason has nothing to do with that individual. The reason has to do with your personal actions regarding Subject Y.K.

— Your Graces…

— You dare speak without our permission! The situation is as follows. First of all, you lied to us about the state of Shinja Andreas. You claimed he was incapable of any action on his own. How do you explain the fact that the man destroyed one of the largest facilities on this earth, and furthermore, one of the greatest repositories of knowledge about mankind? How do you intend to repair these damages?

— …

— Furthermore, we do not understand what you plan to do with the other obsaiadan man, but by any measure he is not on your side. Speak! What do you intend to do with Subject Y.K.?

— Your Graces, I will incapacitate him…

— In the same way you 'incapacitated' Shinja?!

— No, Your Graces.

— Crimson, stop this act. We know your every move. We know what you are plotting, and we will not allow you to carry it out. You knew the best option was to turn the Subject to your side, but even so, he could cause more problems from within. Yet, by any measure, there exists no known method for a man to kill him.

— Yes, you are right—by simple men like you… I said quietly.

— How dare you, wretch. Filth, to utter such an insult in our presence!

— To be honest now… who the fuck do you think you are? You're just ordinary people. You have no abilities, no powers—just the luck of being born into this so-called destiny. I've seen thousands of people like you grow and die. I've seen entire generations come and go. What makes you think you are more special than any other being on this earth? The little scraps of information you possess? You make me laugh.

They all began shouting insults at me, words I could barely hear through the noise of their outrage. It wasn't the first time they reacted like this. And they weren't the first of their kind to think they could command me. I was well aware of Purpleguy's inevitable betrayal—but it didn't matter. I had already found a way to kill him. Andreas Shinja.

Then, I pulled a knife from its sheath and slit my own throat.

All that remained in the chamber was blood—bodies mutilated and butchered by an unknown force. And me, standing in their midst.

"A few hours later, somewhere in an unidentified building…"

I entered the room, looking at the only person who knew my entire plan besides the Men with Hats: Kasahara Kentaro.

— How long do you plan to keep staring at me, Emma? he said, spinning his chair to face me.

— You know why I'm here?

— Yes, I anticipated your arrival. But I am not afraid. After all, neither of us will be leaving this place anytime soon.

— …What do you mean?

— This room was designed for one purpose. That purpose is to trap you here—if not permanently, then at least for some time.

— So, that old man and you truly planned everything. I wonder how much you actually knew.

— You cannot be killed, but unlike someone else, you are not immortal. There exists only one object—or rather, one person—that can make you vulnerable to any physical attack…

— Davis.

Kentaro then pulled back his coat, revealing a revolver. He opened the revolver and slid a single bullet inside. Placing the cold steel beneath his chin, he spoke:

— I have lived a life in which I held the answers to every question… and those very answers have brought me to my end. Can you grant me clarity regarding my final uncertainty?

— Speak.

— You knew Y.K. would turn your brother against you if you didn't poison him. Yet why do you still wish to kill him, if Davis was his only option?

— …I suspect Hamura still had another ace up his sleeve. He knew how powerful we were. That's why he took so many precautions against us.

— You know… parents always know their children best…

I watched as Kentaro's finger hovered over the trigger.

— Kentaro! I have a question for you as well. Do you think it's possible for me to kill Y.K.?

— How certain are you that Calamity can truly change the fate of the obsaiadan beings? He answered me with another question.

— Certain enough to make the necessary sacrifices.

— …If thats what you belive, very well... Farewell, Cristha.
