Episode 47: Last Upload

---

The warehouse was cold, soaked in silence thick enough to choke on. Concrete dust floated in the air, catching the light of the lone laptop they had powered up on an old generator. Every second ticked like a bomb waiting to detonate.

Julian hovered over the keyboard, his fingers dancing as he decrypted the final layer of the drive. Eve stood watch at the door, pulse racing. Reese was high up on the catwalk, sniper rifle locked and scanning.

"Ten percent," Julian muttered. "Uplink is slow… network's still partially firewalled."

Eve paced. "We don't have time. Ghost Net squads are sweeping every block."

Reese's voice crackled over comms. "Movement. Two vans. No logos, but they're armed. Three minutes out."

Julian clenched his jaw. "We need at least five."

"Then we buy you five," Reese replied.

He descended, fast and fluid, flipping his blade and strapping on a second pistol. Eve nodded at him, her grip tightening on her rifle. They'd fought too long to die on the upload bar.

The laptop chirped. "Upload: 34%"

---

Two blocks away

Lucian's men moved like shadows, faces hidden behind polarized masks, guns primed. Their orders were silent—retrieve the drive intact, eliminate everyone else.

Lucian's voice filtered through their comms.

"Bring me D7 alive. The rest are expendable. No media escapes this city."

---

Back at the warehouse

Eve took a breath and peeked through the shattered window. Red beams danced across the walls—laser sights.

"Contact!" she shouted.

Julian didn't flinch. "58%"

The first flashbang hit. Then another.

Glass exploded. Smoke rolled in. But Eve was already firing, ducking and weaving between crates. Reese moved like a ghost, dropping enemies with precision shots and silent kills.

But they kept coming.

Julian crouched lower, shielding the laptop with his body.

"Upload at 74%... almost there…"

A Ghost Net soldier reached the stairs—Reese met him head-on, blade clashing against armor. Blood sprayed.

Eve screamed as a bullet grazed her side, but she didn't stop firing.

Then—another flashbang.

Julian blinked through the white light—saw Lucian step into the haze. Calm. Confident.

"You should've run," Lucian said, pointing a gun at Julian's chest.

Julian smirked. "Upload at 97%."

Lucian's smile vanished.

Too late.

The laptop chirped—"Upload Complete."

All across the world, news outlets lit up.

NEXUS EXPOSED. GLOBAL COVER-UP UNRAVELED.

Julian stood. "Checkmate."

Lucian fired.

But Reese tackled Julian just in time—both men crashing behind crates.

Eve threw a smoke grenade.

Chaos erupted.

They ran.

---

Outside the city

Fifteen miles away, in a quiet mountain cabin, a small TV blinked to life. An old man watched, eyes wide, as the Nexus secrets unraveled.

"The world's waking up," he muttered.
