Episode 48: Fallout

---

Sirens screamed across the city like wailing banshees. News broadcasts looped on every public screen — Nexus Tower, corruption, human experimentation, surveillance atrocities. The truth was out.

But truth doesn't always bring peace.

Inside the van, Eve clutched her side, the blood sticky between her fingers. Reese drove like a demon, eyes locked on the cracked windshield, engine growling as they tore through narrow streets.

Julian sat in the back, still holding the laptop, the drive now useless — but its purpose fulfilled. His body ached, bruised, but his mind raced.

"We did it," Eve whispered. "The whole world saw."

"Yeah," Julian said. "But now we've pissed off every devil with a badge."

The van swerved hard as a drone fired from above — the shockwave knocking out the back window.

"Hang on!" Reese shouted.

They skidded around the corner, metal scraping concrete, bullets sparking behind them. Ghost Net squads hadn't given up.

Elsewhere — Lucian's Underground Compound

Lucian stood before a black mirror of servers. His face reflected dimly, distorted by the code scrolling across the screens — global networks reacting, governments panicking, civilians revolting.

A young agent entered. "Sir… we lost full control. Civil unrest in five sectors. Black sites have gone dark. They're burning the evidence."

Lucian's fist slammed the table.

"They think exposure equals victory," he growled. "They've only opened the gates to chaos."

He turned to the agent, voice low and cold.

"Send the Directive."

The agent froze. "You mean—"

"Yes," Lucian snapped. "Operation Lazarus. Full sweep. Wipe D7 from the map."

Back on the road

Reese pulled into a sewer access tunnel, headlights cutting through the wet darkness. They abandoned the van and vanished into the underground.

Julian adjusted Eve's jacket, trying to slow her bleeding. Her skin was pale, her lips trembling.

"She needs medical," he said.

"There's a safehouse," Reese replied. "Fifteen miles north. Hidden bunker. Off-grid."

Julian helped Eve walk. "Then that's where we go. But after that…"

He looked back toward the city — flames still licking the night sky.

"We go after Lucian. For real this time. No more exposing. We end him."

Underground Nexus Bunker - Classified Level

In a chamber lit with cold blue light, something ancient stirred.

Tubes pulsed. Machines hissed. And in the center… a figure opened his eyes — dark, inhuman, alive.

Lucian watched from behind reinforced glass. His face was blank.

"Welcome back, Subject Zero," he whispered.
