I didn't know what stunned me more seeing Justin at Naomi's door or hearing the words "Tell her to come out now" roll off his lips like it was just any ordinary sentence.
The first shock had barely worn off when he barked the threat at Naomi. If she doesn't come out now, her father will pay for it. The chill in his voice sliced through me like winter wind. It was the kind of tone people didn't question.
Naomi looked back at me, conflicted, but I could see it in her eyes she didn't want a war. Not tonight. Not with him.
So I came out.
I didn't say anything. I just grabbed my coat, walked past him, and went towards the car. Before I got into the car he turned and opened the door for me. The cold air had nothing on the frost between us.
We drove in silence, the car humming beneath the tension.
I couldn't bring myself to look at him, but I felt his eyes on me more than once quick glances, like he wanted to say something but didn't know where to start.
