"Adam, is it true?" Gwen's voice cracked the silence the moment she barged into his office, her heels clicking sharply against the floor.
Adam didn't look up. His eyes stayed glued to the papers in front of him—blank pages he wasn't even reading.
"Yes, Gwen," he said quietly, his voice low and rough. "It's true."
She took a breath, as if she hoped she had misheard him.
"But... why?" she asked, this time softer. The disbelief in her voice cut through the cold air between them. "Why would you let her go?"
He finally looked at her, but not fully. Just a flicker of eye contact before he turned his gaze back to the desk. "Because it was the right thing to do."
"The right thing?" she echoed, stepping closer now. "You love her, Adam. I've seen it. The way you look at her when she isn't watching. The way your voice softens when you say her name. How could you let someone like that just walk away?"
His fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.
