Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Whisper of the Divine

The temple halls were silent, save for the distant hum of the wind weaving through the worn rafters. Yet in that stillness, a voice stirred—not from outside, but from deep within Hikari's mind.

Amandon's voice, both distant and close, soft yet commanding, wrapped around her thoughts like a cloak of mist.

"Hikari, child of light and darkness, your journey is not yet alone."

She froze, her breath caught in her throat. She recognized the voice instantly. Even now, away from the clouds of their first meeting, his presence was unmistakable.

"You have glimpsed your fate, but more remains to be revealed. The others… the four who share your burden… they, too, shall awaken."

In her mind's eye, fragments of distant lives flickered—faces of youths about her age, each carrying shadows of their past and light yet to be uncovered.

"When the time comes, they will remember," Amandon continued, his tone both soothing and ominous. "Their hearts will stir, their dreams will tremble with fragments of who they once were. And when their memories return, when all five of you stand on the edge of destiny's dawn…"

A pause, heavy as stone.

"You will be summoned to the Reverent Council."

The words echoed in the recesses of her heart, ancient and foreign.

"What… is the Reverent Council?" she whispered inwardly.

Amandon's voice softened, almost like a sigh carried on the wind.

"The gathering of gods who once ruled the skies of Earth, now seeking to rebuild their legacy here. There, you will stand among the echoes of eternity. There, you will guide the others—not as a mere girl, but as a beacon. A god in their eyes. A Lightkeeper among those who stumble in the dark."

Hikari's heart pounded. A god? She could barely keep herself from arguing with her father over morning prayers, and now she was to be a leader of souls?

"How can I help them?" she asked quietly.

"You will learn," Amandon answered simply. "Their sorrows, their fears, their anger… these are wounds you must help heal. But beware, for your kindness will not always be enough. Some wounds wish to stay open. Some shadows wish to remain unseen."

The wind outside the temple stirred suddenly, rattling the paper screens.

"Hikari, this truth I leave to you alone. You must not speak of this to anyone. If others learn of the Reverents' plans, if they spread doubt where faith should grow, I will be forced to silence them."

His voice hardened, sharp as winter air.

"I do not wish to take lives… but balance must be preserved."

A chill ran down Hikari's spine. The burden of secrecy pressed upon her shoulders like unseen chains.

"But what of the others?" she asked. "Will they encounter Reverents too?"

Amandon's voice turned distant, as though speaking from beyond the veil.

"Yes. In time, each will meet a Reverent destined to test them. Some will guide them, others will challenge them. Not all gods walk in light, and not all darkness seeks harm. They must learn as you have learned."

She felt the enormity of the path ahead stretching out before her, vast and uncertain.

"So what should I do now?"

"Live, child. Walk your own path. Grow, learn, laugh, weep. Your human heart is your greatest gift. When the time comes, your experiences will light the way for the others."

The voice began to fade, gentle as a fading dream.

"Trust in yourself, and when the sky calls, you will know where to go."

The temple fell silent once more.

Hikari sat in the quiet, her hands resting in her lap, her mind swirling with the weight of destiny.

She glanced toward the setting sun through the temple gates. Somewhere out there, four others like her were walking their own lonely roads, unaware of what awaited them.
