Snow continued to fall over Arendelle, soft and unyielding, blanketing rooftops and gutters in quiet stillness. Inside the castle, though, the hearths glowed warmly, and the walls echoed with laughter, conversation, and music.
It had been several days since the strange hum at the balcony. The threat still lingered, but for tonight, the three of them—Ethan, Anna, and Elsa—were simply together, breathing the same calm.
Dinner by Candlelight
Anna greeted Ethan in the dining hall, handing him a bowl of hearty stew. The table was set simply—tender casseroles, fresh bread, roasted root vegetables, and warm cider floated in small wooden mugs.
Elsa joined them, her presence graceful but easy. The three sat in a triangle—Anna gossiping with animated gestures, Elsa offering thoughtful replies, and Ethan listening, sipping slowly. When Anna caught Ethan's eye, she winked.
"You're quieter tonight," she teased. "Plotting your next hero moment?"
He grinned. "Well, I can't exactly bench-press a snowstorm."
Elsa laughed softly. "You'd be surprised how useful brawn can be."
And for a moment, Ethan felt—not like a guest, not like a stranger—but like family.
Tour of Arendelle
After dinner, they walked the empty streets, lanterns lighting their way. The townsfolk were tucked away, but the castle pages had draped shop windows in white banners and warm wreaths, in tribute to the day Anna saved the kingdom.
Anna paused at each banner, softly touching them, murmuring, "It almost feels like a dream..." Her smile was gentle, and Ethan could see how much she yearned for normalcy.
Elsa reached out, squeezed Anna's hand. "It's real."
Ethan trailed a bit behind, admiring the way the sisters moved—together yet independent, tied deeply but free. When the sisters lingered at a candy-maker's window, savoring the peppermint swirls, Ethan smiled quietly—thinking about how these small joys were exactly what had been threatened.
He approached, offering Anna the joint candy cane. She laughed, sharing half with him.
"See?" she said. "Hero duties can be sweet."
Library Confessions
Later, Elsa pulled Ethan aside in the Royal Library. The chamber was lined with bound volumes of Arendelle's history—records of long winters, treaties, distant explorers.
Ethan allowed himself to linger among them, brushing the spines with curiosity.
Elsa cleared her throat softly. "Thank you," she began. "For staying."
He set down a volume he'd been examining. "I'm not… from around here," he acknowledged. "But home's not always where you're born."
Elsa traced a finger along a dusty book. "Sometimes I feel… like I've been frozen to the moment I discovered my power." She voiced a memory she rarely said: the day their parents died, her first surge of fear, the moment she fled.
Ethan's tone was tender. "You don't have to stay frozen."
She gave him a grateful smile. "Not with those I love by my side."
Garden Solace
Before sunrise, Ethan joined Anna in the castle's small greenhouse—a room filled with evergreens and rare flowers kept from the cold by careful magic and warmth.
Anna hummed gently, tending to a pot of early-blooming lilies.
"Thank you for bringing me here," she said softly, watching him.
He reached out and gently touched a dewy petal. "It's beautiful."
She looked up, shy. "It was your idea."
They fell into a comfortable silence.
"Ethan, I…" she began, her voice barely above a whisper.
He turned to face her fully. The greenhouse light softened the outlines of her face. She continued, "I hope… when this is all over, you'll stay."
He exhaled deeply. "I..I don't know about that."
Her expression relaxed, as though she'd been holding her breath.
Balcony Confessions
At night, Ethan found himself once more on the balcony—the same spot where the hum had echoed.
Elsa joined him.
She stood beside him silently, looking up at the snowflakes.
"My power is… part of me," she said after a moment, voice quiet. "But tonight, I realized… my power doesn't define who I could be."
Ethan offered her one of the knitted mittens Anna had made. "Temperature's not the only measure of warmth."
Elsa smiled and took his hand briefly. "Thank you for reminding me."
A Moment of Promise
Before they parted for bed, Anna kissed Ethan once more—fuller than before, filled with promise.
"Good night," she whispered, looking at him with quiet joy.
"Sleep well," he replied, watching as she glanced toward the closed door Elsa held for her.
When Anna was gone, Ethan found Elsa waiting in the hallway—watching him.
Elsa placed a hand on his arm and whispered, "She's happy."
He nodded.
"In a way, you've already helped us build a new future."
Elsa's voice lowered: "And maybe… build one for yourself too."
Ethan met her gaze, understanding her meaning. Their connection deepened—not romantic, but forged by trust, compassion, and respect. The moment was fleeting, but it stayed with him.
