Chapter 4 - Belly of the Beast.

The coffee machine works hard producing a dark mix. Its subtle noise traffic remains the only thing filling the faculty break room at the moment, early this Saturday morning.

Enter, Vivian Oonami.

"Hopefully... This new semester brings forward some interesting freshman students."

Vivian adjusts her large circle lens glasses. The trinkets and charms clink together as she shifts the frame.

"... I've started to grow quite tired of the run of the mill normalcy."

She held her phone up to her ear as she watched her coffee brew. Who she was talking to remains unknown at the moment.

"Right. That's also a factor to consider."

She sets the phone on the counter. The contact name displays as 'V'. Shortly after, the call hangs up. Presumably, due to the other end of the call ending it.

She finished brewing her coffee with a heavy sigh as Brett walked in the break room in his professor attire. Nothing more than a button up, some thin frames and black jeans, he sauntered to the coffee machine to get himself a nice drink to start the morning off. He's thinking to himself about this current school year and how the new students are going to behave. Last year was, as Vivi said, ordinary. He looks over at Vivian

"Good morning. Are you excited for the new school year?"

Vivian scans Dr. Syphon as he walks in.

"Excited is... One way to put it."

She takes a sip from her cup of coffee as she approaches the event board. Instead of a normal push pin and paper filled board, it was entirely digital and touch screen interactive. One particular piece of information catches her eyes specifically, however. Though, she doesn't comment on it just yet.

"... Saw you on the news again this morning. The city's hero saves the day again. . This time though, it was in the middle of the night."

She turns to face him.

"Do you even sleep?"

"I have to keep Petrichor safe after all."

He leans against the counter.

"I get some sleep every now and again, don't worry."

He looks at the coffee machine. It's now done with his blend of coffee, he grabs the cup and sips it, completely unaffected by the fact that the coffee is steaming hot and would most definitely burn his tongue. Weirdo.

"Right."

She then looks back at the board, and touches a certain information tab. It enlarges an announcement on the new semester computer science major roster. She scrolls the list of names, and comes across a certain, interesting one.

"Leo Xavier."

Her eyes narrow.

"What's Lex doing switching into your class this year?"

He sips again.

"I had the administration transfer him to my class. Besides. More students, the better."

He glanced around. It's just them for right now. An ulterior motive, perhaps...? Either way, he walks over to the event board, coffee at hand, looking at the roster in full. So many names, none of which particularly interest him outside of a teacher perspective. Obviously he remembers all of them, but he doesn't really care for them.

"I see..." She sighs.

"Well, I won't go prying into your history. But, from what I know..."

She glanced at him with a side eye.

"Make sure you're playing this safe."

He glances at Vivian.

"Don't worry about me."

He then looks back at the board.

"... Besides, I would prefer to keep watch on him. Not after that stunt he pulled all those years ago."

Distant arguing could be heard in the distance, and the noise drifted closer to the room, getting closer with every step. It catches both Vivian, and Brett's attention as they hear familiar voices. One side of the argument was joking around, while the other half tried to be genuine in creating a dialogue.

Enter Jeff, and Jeremy Oonami.

"I don't fucking care about some rando bake sale, Jeffy. I have my own life!"

Jeremy spoke in a sarcastic tone as he entered the break room, looking back at Jeff with an agitated look, his left eye twitching from the idea. Jeremy had his hand grabbed onto his shorter brother's shoulder, tugging on it half affectionately and frustrated. He had been trying to get Jeremy to do something with him over the past few months, but he ghosted him at the last second every time they made plans.

"C'mon, it's for a good cause!"

Jeff said, his voice deep yet light-hearted, like a talking pillow that's been cried on all night.

"I promise that it will be fun, or at least mildly amusing,"

He still never had quite figured out what made his brother tick, so this conversation had become the equivalent of throwing darts with a blindfold.

"..."

Vivian glared at the two over the top of her coffee mug as she took a sip. All this bickering, this early? She doesn't comment, however. Sure, they may be her own children, but here they are simply her coworkers. Her conversation with Dr. Syphon comes to an absolute pause once they enter. The topic from before was so long lost, it was as if they were never speaking of it to begin with. As he was typing away, he glanced over at the bickering teachers. Jeff and Jeremy... Well, at least there's more people here. He glanced at them

"Good morning to the two of you."

He greets the siblings, typing without even looking at his own computer, but knowing exactly what he's typing on the thing. What a talent. Jeremy gave them both a half-hearted wave, not bothering to face the two of them. While he wouldn't talk to them either way, he never trusted public figures known for their good morals since he tends to be the opposite. Plus in his mind, 'Brett is a stupid name; it sounds like a guy who roofies people's drinks at frat parties' or something along those lines. He reached into the pantry and pulled out a bag of stale hard pretzels and began munching on them like no tomorrow.

"Oh uh... hey, good morning,"

While Jeff still cared about his mom, internally he still thought she had practically ruined their lives. Well, it's not quite ruined. They both had a well-paying job here, but that wasn't much of a consolation.

"How are you doing?" He asked with a forced smile,

He was trying to keep a peace that had already been broken. The man dusted off his shoulder even though nothing was there, a nervous tick of his.

The tension between those two has always annoyed him, but he's never once made any physical indications of such. He looks over at Jeff and then responds.

"I'm doing fine. Looking into the courses I'll be studying this semester."

"Oh-?"

He looks at his watch. Something seemed to be urgent, as he then got up and left with his laptop in hand. No one knows what it could be, but he does own a major business after all. He's expected to be a pretty busy man. Vivian receives a notification on her phone, and leaves shortly after as well. Not without a slightly dismissive wave goodbye to the twins, however.

"Damn it..."

Jeffery slammed his fist against the fridge, all of the glass and metal clinging and clanging.

"What's got your panties in a bunch?" Jeremy said with a muted chuckle, finding amusement in his brother's outburst.

"Like you fucking care," Jeff said, storming out of the room like a bull. It was always a gamble whether or not he'd snap when agitated.

"... Wow." Jeremy then continues munching on his chips in the solitude of the break room.
